I’m going to hope and assume that a lot of you reading this remember The Lorax. It was one of Dr. Seuss’s best books in my opinion and while the original story might not have had quite as much material as was put into the movie the film was something quite special all the same. It has the same message that’s been given throughout the last few decades but it still manages to bring it up and then show the devastation that comes from not replacing what was taken from nature. The Lorax is the bearer of the warning that comes when nature is forced to suffer an imbalance, and the ruination that comes is what could be expected if we as a people aren’t willing to leave things as they were for the next generation.
It’s a wake-up call in the form of a kids movie.
10. In the original book the Once-ler was never fully shown.
He was only ever shown from the arms down, leaving readers to think that he was something other than human. In the movie it was deemed important to make him human to make it a more inclusive story.
9. Grammy Norma has the letters to use for the word LORAX while playing Scrabble.
Grammy Norma is old enough to remember that trees used to be everywhere and that the Lorax was a very real person, as was the Once-ler.
8. The original name of the town is Greenville.
For the movie it was renamed Thneedville to showcase the Once-ler’s invention and promote the idea of industrialism and its effects.
7. This movie came on the heels of the success that was Horton Hears a Who.
It must have been considered that if Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell could make a Seuss book a hit then so could other actors.
6. Ed Helms does the young and old versions of his character.
There’s not a whole lot of difference between the two except a more gravelly tone of voice from the older version.
5. In the original film the Once-ler was indifferent to the Lorax.
It’s also this way in the book, as the Once-ler was kind of a jerk that didn’t care about anything but profit. But in the movie they become friends for a while and at the end of the film.
4. While he’s gathering everything for the Once-ler it can be seen that Ted has a minion figure in his drawer.
There’s a few little Easter eggs hiding in the movie, at least one or two more have to do with Despicable Me.
3. Dr. Seuss’ widow loved what was done with the story.
In fact she gave the studio permission to work on all of her late husband’s books from that point on since she was so impressed.
2. Rob Riggle does both versions of O’Hare.
It does help that the young version of O’Hare didn’t have a lot of dialogue.
1. Taylor Swift doesn’t sing in the final song.
That seems odd since she’s a singer by trade. But maybe she didn’t want to step on any toes.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
