Lady Bird is a coming of age story that shows the life of Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson and how she is so highly dissatisfied with her life that she wishes to change just about everything. It starts with her desire to seek higher education on the other side of the country despite her mother’s objections and the fact that she might not be able to afford it. Throughout the movie however she does whatever it takes to be seen as someone different, even going against her best friend and alienating herself for a time before she reconciles with her before eventually making her way to New York after being accepted into a college. The movie is pretty much one long story of a young woman that doesn’t know what she has but in the end realizes just how much those who love her have given throughout her life.
It’s an eye-opener really.
10. The director advised Saorsie Ronan not to cover up her acne.
This was no doubt to put more realism into the movie and to focus on Lady Bird as a real individual and not someone that’s gorgeous but somehow has so many problems to deal with.
9. The first draft of the movie would have made it over six hours long.
That might have worked as a TV series but not a movie. Something seems to indicate that a two-part movie in this fashion wouldn’t have been nearly as popular.
8. This film is Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut.
This is the first time she’s ever been at the helm of a movie and to be honest it turned out pretty good.
7. The director was the polar opposite of the lead character growing up.
Gerwig was never rebellious or out of sorts. She was always straight-laced and followed rules apparently.
6. Ronan drew inspiration from Saved by the Bell.
There’s at least a dozen shows she could have pulled from to emulate the life of an angst-ridden teenager, but Saved by the Bell is an odd choice.
5. Gerwig encouraged the actors to keep secrets about their characters.
This would certainly lend the characters a little more depth and mystique if even the director didn’t know their full story.
4. The working title was Mothers and Daughters.
It definitely doesn’t have the same ring to it as Lady Bird does. The title goes a long way towards selling the movie.
3. Gerwig had a snack named after her.
She was seen eating Cheetos and consuming Diet Coke so often that the cast named the snack The Gerwig.
2. The college that it’s presumed Lady Bird was accepted by is Barnard.
It’s never officially stated but the colors that are on the admissions packet seem to indicate the school. Plus, this was where Gerwig attended school so it makes some kind of sense.
1. One of the actors was actually accepted to one of the colleges that Lady Bird applied to.
Timothee Chalamet attended Columbia University for a year before he decided to drop out and focus on acting.
It’s a different kind of movie but it’s engaging and pretty funny in some spots.
