Alright, before I begin to dive into reviewing this week’s dramatic episode of Madam Secretary, let me just say that I am beyond relieved that Henry and Elizabeth’s marriage is still as strong as ever despite their heated arguments. I felt great sympathy for Henry while watching this episode because I know that he wanted desperately to save Talia Petrov to make up for not saving her brother Dmitri. Though I have to agree with Jane when she said that they can’t save everyone, that and Talia refused to let the lawyer that Henry hired represent her as she is locked up behind bars. Stubborn girl, that Talia.
I liked the scene where Elizabeth mentioned to her kids that the horses on the farm are coming back from spending the winter on another farm and that her favourite horse, Buttercup, is returning as well which led to some light teasing from the McCord children. I love these family moments, it shows that though things are chaotic in the world, there’s still some normalcy to be had. Oh, when Stevie said that Hello Kitty is the Chanel of our time, I literally rolled my eyes at her comment. Hello Kitty is for little girls and die-hard fanatics. It doesn’t exactly measure up to a brand like Chanel. Or maybe she made that comment in jest as she often does in her own way?
The scene where Henry and Elizabeth are having lunch together in her office is also nice. I never thought that they would find the time to eat together given that they both have very hectic schedules. The niceness didn’t last for very long, of course, as the two launched into another argument.
My heart also went out to Elizabeth when she found out that her beloved horse Buttercup is suffering from a form of cancer and has to be put down. It’s often difficult to say goodbye to a family pet, especially if there’s a strong bond between the animal and its owner. I’m also glad that Henry came back to the farm and told his emotionally distraught wife that no matter what happens, they’re together. Yet I have a feeling that this brief moment of reassurance will not last as the season finale approaches.
I applauded Elizabeth for turning the tables on the Russian Foreign Minister. The latter strong-armed her, to an extent, on the U.S. vetoing any new Eastern European nations that wanted to join NATO for the next ten years. Take that, Russia! The Secretary of State’s U.N speech was awesome too, good job, writers!
It was also ingenious and considerate on Henry’s part to bring in Laila Ayyad to offer a source of comfort for Hijriyyah so that the scared young woman can begin to let her guard down and start talking. It was way better than Agent Campo’s idea to torture the information out of her. The Murphy Station team learned that Hijriyyah is not afraid of Disah, but her father, Idris Al Bouri. Once the man’s location is found, a drone strike is initiated, thus killing Hijriyyah’s abusive father. After learning of her father’s death, Hijriyyah said that Disah is planning to hide out in the I-8 district of Islamabad, a residential area in Pakistan. Now please go and take the guy out once and for all!
