In this week’s episode of Limitless, Brian tried to take down every member of the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted List. In exchange, he just wanted a small headquarters (not an office but a headquarters) with an exclamation mark, and the ability to choose some of his own cases once in a while. The point was he wanted the CJC to see him for what he is. The side plot was the growing rift between Brian and his father.
Almost from the very beginning of the episode, Brian was seen taking out members of the list. At first, it was just a way to prove to Naz that he could. Finally, when she agreed to the deal, all bets were off! He assembled his own private squad, aka the Brian Finch and Rebecca Harris Amazing Major Crime Squad, or its nickname the Bruntouchables. As his squad was off gallivanting around the globe, Brian and Rebecca were tracking Lawrence Drake, a man who escaped prison after killing his wife. Only problem with that is that Drake always pleaded not guilty, and after looking around his place, Brian was 59% sure he was telling the truth. It was now up to him, Drake, and Rebecca to find the actual killer. How were they going to do that after nine years or so? Simple: give the person on the Most Wanted List NZT. Even I have to admit I was shocked. In the end, the killer was caught and admitted he killed the wife for a dozen bagels from his favorite place every week.
In the beginning, I didn’t like the family plot line on Limitless so much. It just showed again that distance and tension that was there between Brian and his dad. Brian, in fact, did the math while he was on NZT. I thought that the show would just regurgitate the same storyline until viewers got a conclusion at either the winter finale or season finale, but if there’s anything I’ve learned about Limitless, it’s that this series doesn’t like the keep the audience waiting! The show didn’t when Brian had the NZT FBI file and he was debating whether or not to give it to Rebecca, and it didn’t in this week’s episode. In the end, as the title card came up, Brian was telling his dad all about the drug. Granted, there were a few harsh words thrown in there because his dad said he’d been avoiding him. Now, I understand that there should be a degree of truth between any two people in relationships, whether it be a father and son, brother and sister, friend and friend, etc. However, when the government is telling Brian that he cannot share secrets, why make his life worse by cutting yourself out?
In the end, I thought it was a pretty average episode of Limitless. “Headquarters!” had a lot to live up to after last week’s terrific episode. To develop so many of those minor characters only just to have go them pushed to the background again is pointless. Naz can only be seen as bossy again. Mike and Ike were, literally, just there for comedic effect. Boyle was just another agent. In fact, he was a stupid agent, because when he went on a stake-out with Casey, the gym instructor/Rebecca’s boyfriend, he basically told him that Brian was taking drugs. I get that he may have an attitude with Brian, but don’t sell the guy out! Also, when they gave Drake, the prison escapee, the NZT, something occurred to me: what exactly is the amount of pills you can take before you start to feel sick and die? I was wondering that when they first suggested giving him the pill. Apparently, everything worked out, but I’m just curious.
