Since the [easyazon_link identifier=”B000U1ZV8K” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Lethal Weapon movies[/easyazon_link] came out it’s been obvious that Martin Riggs is anything but stable. But how did he get that way? We know a substantial part of it was the death of his wife and the guilt he felt at not being there when she might have needed him. That alone could twist a man up in all kinds of ways that could lead to the intense emotional and psychological issues that Riggs has had since his introduction. But now that the TV series is entering its second season we might finally get to see just what makes Martin Riggs really tick, and why.
We get to meet his dad.
We’ll get to see that Riggs’ issues aren’t just a byproduct of his wife’s death.
Now granted, a man’s wife dying when he’s not around and, as he found out later, are a result of his meddling in someone else’s affairs, could do a lot to twist him up inside. But that kind guilt and despair isn’t commonly seen to create the kind of socio and even psychopathic behavior that Martin Riggs has displayed for so long. In the movies and even on the TV show in recent times he’s been shown to be a carefree, fun-loving individual that knows how to have a good time and unwind. But there’s always that darker, more aggressive side to him that’s always ready to come out at a moment’s notice.
In the movies he settled down and had a child, but that darker half of his nature was always there as a bastion against the darkness and pain that his job could bring. He was a man who’d lost his wife due to his being a cop, and then lost another lover for the same reason. Riggs would have lost another love if not for the fact that she was more than his match and came prepared. In short, Riggs is a guy that wants to be happy and knows how to be happy, but there’s always a darker side just on the horizon that he can unleash when he needs it. Now why is that? Perhaps the explanation will be seen in the flashbacks with his father.
What could his father be like to create a man like Riggs?
No matter who Riggs Sr. is in his life he likely won’t be Mr. Sunshine all the time. Those that become disturbed individuals later on in life usually do so because of an event or a series of events that force them to endure a lifestyle that is anything but nurturing and positive. It could be that Riggs’ father wasn’t an evil man by any standard, but just a hard person to live around and a harder person to learn from. There won’t be a lot of explanation until we get to see the flashback scenes that will show a young Riggs with his father. Hopefully we’ll get some further insight into Riggs’ character this next season.
