Josh Brolin Revealed as ‘Deadpool 2’s Cable

It looks as if Deadpool 2 — the highly anticipated sequel to everybody’s favorite action-comedy from 2016 — is finally in full swing.  Despite a few bumps along the way, including the unceremonious departure of Deadpool director Tim Miller fro the project, everything seems in order for the superhero meta-comedy to be released next year.

Last week we got our first look at the first newcomer to the popular new film franchise.  Domino — a mutant assassin and on-again / off-again love interest for the Merc with a Mouth — was revealed in all her fleshy glory via Twitter.  The picture revealed the curvaceous character sprawled out on Deadpool’s lifeless frame in front of a roaring fire.  Reynolds opined in his reveal that “some people just know how to work a red carpet.”

Taking a similar approach this week to another fan favorite character from the comics, Ryan Reynolds revealed the look for Josh Brolin’s Cable.  First announced in Deadpool‘s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off-inspired post-credit scene, fans finally have their first look at the character whose needlessly convoluted backstory will likely consume the bulk of Deadpool 2‘s screen time.

What we are treated to is an unkempt, gruff-looking Josh Brolin.  The right half of his face is crossed with jagged battle scars.  In place of his left eye is a robotic prosthetic.  A metal finger crosses his pursed, almost-smiling lips in a silent “shush.”  Never the silent type, Reynolds captions the reveal with “we all have that one, heavily armed Uncle from the future.”

Reynolds quickly followed up his first Tweet with a second.  The second image gave us a second look at the dystopic warrior.  It shows off not just the extent of his bio-mechanical prosthetic arm, but the hint of the techno-organic virus he is infected with crawling up the side of his neck.

His drag garbed is strapped with as much ammos and explosives as they can conceivably hold.  An over-sized gun is slung half-hazzardly over his shoulder.  And yes, that is a teddy bear strapped to his side.

Reynolds, of course, had some thoughts to share on this second image: “Deadpool 2: Your premium #Cable provider.”

Although taken at face-value when he first appeared in 1990, Marvel writers have long played the grimdark soldier of fortune for laughs alongside everybody’s favorite red-clad mercenary.  Born Nathan Christopher Summers — the son of the X-Men’s Cyclops and Jean Grey — the dangerous reality of his childhood necessitated that he be sent to an dystopic, alternate future timeline.  There he became the powerful mutant known as Cable, who was sent back in time to the mainstream Marvel timeline, where he began interacting with his parents (now younger than him) and all of Marvel’s other superheroes and villains.

In addition to his learned abilities as a leader and formidable combatant, Cable has a large host of superpowers.  His is a vastly powerful telepath and telekinetic, said to be the most powerful of his kind in the future timeline where he was raised.  He can additionally use his powers to psionically travel through time.

His techno-organic physiology offers him an additional assortment of abilities, including superhuman strength, speed and endurance.  His Cybernetic eye grants him enhanced sensory abilities, including the capacity to view the electro-magnetic spectrum.  He also has the power to rearrange the atomic structure of his body, allowing himself to rapidly and completely heal from any injury he might sustain.

Exactly how much of his backstory, and how many of his powers, will make it on screen remains to be seen.  But even a streamlined version of the character will prove to be a massive undertaking in audience patience for comic book weirdness.  Still, if Deadpool 2 is even half as good as the first one, it will still be one of 2018’s best movies.
