Baby Villanueva/Solano is finally here! Jane the Virgin wraps up its first successful season with the birth of Jane and Rafael’s child, but the arrival of their new little bundle is not the craziest thing that happens yet.
Jane is actually pretty calm three weeks away from her due date. Her parents on the other hand are far more stressed out. Rogelio and Xiomara have their Vegas show this week, and Jane has to practically push them out the door. Now, most parents do get a little antsy when their child is about to have a kid of their own, and Xo and Rogelio definitely have reason to, since Villanueva babies apparently have a history of coming quickly. Before Jane goes into labor, she needs to deal with a few things first.
Rafael is on a mission to get his life in order before the baby comes. Step 1: Get Petra to sell her half of the Marbella so he can get her out of his life. Unfortunately, this means Rafael has to dip into his old playboy tricks to get what he wants, toying with a naïve Petra. Petra shouldn’t be underestimated, because when she overhears Rafael saying that he really doesn’t care about her, she decides to not tell Rafael about a very important phone call he received. This little phone call just happened to casually mention that Rafael has another sperm sample out there, and Petra decides that it might be a good idea for her to keep the sample for herself. Oh boy.
Rafael has no knowledge of this, so he continues with his plans. Step 2: Win Jane back, preferably before their child is born. He has heavy competition with Michael, who is actually pretty excellent at motivating and taking care of Jane. Rafael sees Jane slipping away, and so as before when he first realized he had feelings for her, Rafael tells Jane the truth. He makes a heartfelt speech saying he made a mistake breaking up with her and that he still loves her. All Jane can hear is that he lied to her and broke her heart, and she throws him out. Michael later comes over wanting another chance with Jane, too, until she starts talking about feeling comfortable and safe with him, which is not what he wanted to hear.
During the course of this episode, Michael comes home to find his ex-partner Nadine there, wanting to make a deal. She agrees to lead Michael to the plastic surgeon who changed Sin Rostro/Rose’s face in exchange for safety for her family and leniency for herself. Unfortunately, the deal doesn’t work if the surgeon is dead. Since the deal is no longer on the table, the first chance she gets, Nadine runs. Before we all start to panic that Michael has been duped, it turns out it was his plan all along in order for Nadine to lead the police to Sin Rostro.
Unable to really focus on what to do about Rafael and Michael, Jane goes to a meeting with a grad school representative to appeal her rejected application, which was only denied because she missed the deadline by two days. She does a good job of eloquently stating her case, especially since she starts to go into active labor. That’s right, Jane’s baby is coming quick, and he or she is not waiting. Evidently, Villanueva babies come extremely fast, so Jane’s contractions go from eight minutes apart to four in less than half an hour on the bus ride home (yikes!). The people on the bus are extremely accommodating, though, and the bus driver even takes her straight to the hospital after Xiomara does some bossing around over the phone. Jane even gets a little encouragement from Rogelio’s bus ads as she did in the pilot, only this time the advice is coming from dear old dad.
Xiomara arranges the first flight back home she can get in the morning to get to Jane, and then apologizes to Rogelio for not being able to do the show. Rogelio is deeply hurt that Xiomara would think he is more upset about missing the show than his grandchild’s birth, and arranges a flight home as well. They have a whole night to kill before their flight, though, and so they go drinking with Rogelio’s fan club. Never go binge drinking in Vegas, I repeat, NEVER get wasted in Las Vegas, unless you want to end up accidentally married. Jane’s parents just tied the knot everyone!
Jane labors hard during the night, despite also having an epidural. Rafael catches her in between contractions to ask that, firstly, their child’s surname have the Solano name in it, and secondly, that she at least think about giving him another chance since he just sold his father’s company so that he could focus on his family. He even puts his differences with Michael aside and offers to call him so that Michael can get Jane’s parents from the airport.
Then comes a scene which is the perfect example of why I love Jane the Virgin, and why Gina Rodriguez deserved her Golden Globe. As Jane’s labor goes on, she becomes unbelievably exhausted and despondent, crying that she can’t keep going. Xiomara arrives just in time to give her daughter that last push (pardon the pun) to keep going. And it’s…a boy!!!! Welcome to the world Mateo Gloriano Rogelio Solano-Villanueva (yes, Latinos have extremely long names; sometimes I think we just can’t make up our minds). Jane falls head over heels for her son, and it’s clear he is the new man in her life; but wait, where is that nurse going with Mateo? The final minute of Jane the Virgin shows Jane’s newborn son being kidnapped and placed in the hands of Sin Rostro. What?!
