Does anyone remember the movie that began a virtual onslaught of glorious battle scenes in movies? Don’t get me wrong, battle scenes have been taking place well before the movie I’m about to mention. However, when we’re talking two groups of 100 or more people lined up, facing each other and then running at each other for complete bedlam I have to give a nod to Braveheart. If you want to get technical the movie Glory had some fantastic battle scenes. But after Braveheart is when you really started to see these kinds of battles become prevalent in modern film. Off the top of my head I fondly remember the battle scenes in Gladiator, the LOTR trilogy, The Last Samurai, and even Star Wars. So what makes a great battle scene? The Nerdwriter is back with a new video essay, and this time, he’s doing a deep dive into the epic action battle of Helm’s Deep in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. It’s an appreciation of how Jackson and co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens structured the battle as a microcosm of the larger story of the trilogy itself, and watching it may help you think differently about the scene the next time you sit down and rewatch these movies.
