Great Uses of Songs in Movies: I Want Your Body by Nymphomania in “True Romance”

True Romance was a rather brutal movie, but putting the one scene between Clarence and Drexl to I Want Your Body by Nymphomania was more of a way to control the setting than anything. Look at the room, dark, dingy, the table in front of Drexl is littered with food, there are scantily-clad or full on naked women around the area, and of course a big, hard-hitting bodyguard that looks like he could break Clarence in half if his boss gave the word. Seeing Gary Oldman as Drexl is kind of an odd role to see him in, since dreadlocks don’t seem to be the type of style that really suits him. But back in the day he played some crazy parts, so in some way it does fit.

But Clarence is walking into trouble, there’s no doubt about that. The seductive lure of the music and the darkness within the area are both factors that are working against him. Another is that he doesn’t know his surroundings well enough to be as confident as he looks. He’s just a guy in love, a guy that married a call girl because of true love and now has to find a way to get her away from the pimp that he knows won’t let her go. Drexl is a little off. Well, let’s be honest, he’s a LOT off, and thinks he knows something about people. He guesses right though that Clarence walked in without a care in the world. True love does some strange things to people. In many ways it can make you invincible until that moment when you get hit and forgot that you’re only human.

The manner in which Drexl attacks is off balance and more out of desperation since he doesn’t do enough damage to put Clarence down. But Clarence is literally fighting for his life as he reverse headbutts the bodyguard and then starts teeing off on Drexl. You would almost think that throwing him into the fish tanks against the wall would put him down for longer, but there’s also the idea that Drexl is wired in some illicit way as well. It’s not a for sure thing after all but if it’s not then he’s just a crazy bugger that really doesn’t know how to fight but can still take one heck of a hit. Of course that quality doesn’t save him when Clarence pulls the gun and makes him a eunuch on the spot. He’s singing a different tune at that point, and as Clarence drops the bodyguard with a couple of shots he’s quick to yell at one of the girls to get Alabama’s things and put them in a bag.

Then it’s night night time for Drexl as Clarence empties the gun and takes off. What he doesn’t know however is that the bag isn’t filled with clothing. It’s got enough cocaine to have him sent to prison for a long, long time. I Want Your Body is a perfect song for this scene simply because it’s not too challenging and it’s not so low that you can’t hear it. It sets the tone from the moment Clarence walks in until he finally shoots Drexl and walks out.
