Gotham Season 2 Episode 6 Review: “By Fire”

Gotham

This week’s episode of Gotham continues the Firefly storyline as Bridget Pike ends up getting into more than just one heated situation. Meanwhile, Butch’s tires to infiltrate the Galavans’ organization, and Nygma’s relationship with Kringle comes to a shocking ending.

While it wasn’t a huge improvement from last week, I was able to enjoy the Firefly arc a little bit more this time around in last night’s Gotham, and it was refreshing to see that at the end of all of this, Bridget never turned into a full-on bad guy. Aside from robbing people with Selina in order to get away from Gotham City, she was trying to use what she had to actually help innocent people, which I respected a lot. However, it did still tie-in with my prediction that she would end up being a tragic character, although there is a twist: she didn’t get killed off! We will get to that ending in a bit, as there are even more question marks hanging in the air now.

I don’t know if I have commented much on Butch in past reviews, but he is easily one of the most likable characters on Gotham. And he isn’t having it easy at all right now because of all the things he has to go through. I will say, though, that it was hilarious to see that his stump is now a mallet after his hand was chopped off by the Penguin. It ended up being pretty Funny when he tried to take down Tabitha in their little fight at the Galavan residence. Speaking of Tabitha, can we please get this character some proper character development and some interesting layers? It’s been six weeks now, and this character, who I was most excited for this season to see get introduced, is still just as one-dimensional as she was from her first episode. The dark wittiness isn’t doing it for me, and it feels that all she can do really well is just throw around that whip of hers.

If there is one thing that this new season is suffering from, it’s pacing, as I feel like the writers are executing certain arcs at very early points. If you need examples of what I mean, just look at the deaths of Captain Essen and Jerome. I get that there are certain plots the writers want to progress and move forward with, which is fine, but why do so many big things have to happen so early? This week we have another one of those as Nygma reveals to Kringle that he killed her boyfriend. Before I go on, I honestly thought there was going to be a big twist where Kringle would actually love the fact that Nygma murdered her abusive boyfriend and have that be another imperative factor in his path towards becoming The Riddler. But that isn’t the case, as she is horrified when hearing the news, and as Nygma tries to calm her, he accidentally kills her. I don’t have a problem with the death itself; it’s just the timing that drives me insane. These remaining episodes of the first half of Season 2 better have some improvement on the pacing because it’s starting to get silly.

Let’s talk about the ending, which revealed all sorts of confusion. As Bridget got her whole body burned, she gets transferred to something called “Indian Hill,” which is where someone is keeping “the monsters.” We then find out that Indian Hill is a division of Wayne Enterprises. Is this something that Theo is involved with or is this an introduction of another big Batman villain? I agree very much with Lucas Siegel of Comicbook.com that this could be the entrance of Hugo Strange onto Gotham a character that producers have announced will make his debut this season. Only time will tell, but I expect Gotham to reveal who it is in the mid-season finale.

Gotham airs on Monday nights at 8/7c on FOX.
