I am a movie fanatic. It is absolutely impossible to miss me. Whether you are going to see a horror flick like Insidious or an action flick like The Bourne Identity, pencil me in. Now there is what I like to call safe territory in my home. That genre that is an idea for everyone – comedy. Of course, nowadays comedies can get pretty dark, which means that it may not be good for the younger kids in the home. The movie Blockers has some adult content in the way of ideas and intentions, but it is pretty clean.
Blockers is a movie starring, Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholz, and John Cena centered on the idea of parents of high school seniors who are preparing for prom night. The movie is a comedic look at every father’s worse nightmare, the day their baby girl grows up and discovers her sexuality. Basically, the movies get its name from the fact that once these parents gain insight into the fact that their graduating seniors are entering into a sex pact for prom night, they go on o covert mission to disrupt the pact.
As with any good comedy, nothing goes the way they initially planned it. The movie trailer starts out with John Cena sniffing and chewing on pink thong panties that he believes belongs to his wife, but quickly finds out they belong to his daughter and everything goes downhill from there. Without giving the movie away, there is nonstop action as these parents, who bit off more than they could while snooping in their children’s text messages and social media accounts, are forced to go through all types of crap as they attempt to stop their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night.
I keep asking myself if my prom dates family was this invested in interfering with our night. I actually think this is some new-age type parenting. Social media has forced parents to take their parenting game to an entirely different level. With teenage girls in the house, I can testify to the levels one must go to ensure they have protected from themselves. It is amazing how kids really believe that they have everything all figured out.
What makes this movie so funny is that almost everything in it is relatable. Yes, it is over the top, but I can see myself doing what I have to shut down something sinister happening on prom night. Watching John Cena struggle with the fact that his daughter is becoming a young lady brings out all types of memories in dealing with my daughter. It kills me how calm the mother is when she says, “Kayla (which also my 20-year-olds name) is becoming a woman. And like most of us men, John Cena is still trapped 17 years in the past when he first held his daughter. As the parents are snapped back into reality, all types of wild chances and manly challenges erupt. What starts out as a simple trip to the prom turns into the war of the ages.
