Ghostbusters Sequel in Jeopardy?

This summer the reboot of Ghostbusters hit movie theaters with it’s all female cast. The movie was shrouded in a ton of controversy from using all women to whether or not the film even needed a reboot in the first place. Yet, with hit director Paul Feig behind the wheel it seemed as though the franchise was in good hands. Regardless of the reviews and ratings, Ghostbusters is a large enough property that it seemed easily guaranteed for a sequel as long as it didn’t completely bomb at the box office, but it turns out that might not be the case.

Back in July the president of worldwide distribution for Sony, Rory Bruer, was quoted saying that there was “no doubt in his mind” that a sequel would happen. Now news is coming out that the potential sequel for Ghostbusters might not be a sure thing as the film is looking at a potential $70 million loss. As of right now Ghostbusters has grossed $117 million in the domestic box office and $180 worldwide and still hasn’t hit countries such as France, Mexico or Japan; however, there is the chance that the movie maxes out at $225 million.

When the numbers get broken down, it cost $144 million to make the movie and an unspecified amount on top of that for all of the marketing. Sony has stated that Ghostbusters would need to make $300 million to break even on the investment, which has them potentially looking at a $70 million loss overall which has the studio questioning if a sequel would be worth it.

Ghostbusters is a massive franchise that can make money from plenty of markets; The new toy line is apparently selling decently and many other attractions were created with the film. Original series creator, Ivan Reitman, is even working on an animated film as well as an animated television series that are expected to be out in the 2018-19 range. Whether or not the motion picture gets a sequel, Ghostbusters will live on, but hopefully these women get another shot to save the world.
