The Flash has gotten off to an incredibly great start in its first season, while most other comic book series take a while to find their groove when they first begin. Do you think other shows should borrow a page or two from The Flash?
Andy: One word: fun. A lot of the comic books shows that we have, particularly DC TV, are very dark and I think that does work, but they could definitely use some more light in them like The Flash has. S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s second season has already borrowed some of that from The Flash by balancing the two tones. I’m all for seeing tortured, struggling and complex superheroes, but with the world that we are living in that can sometime be a very dark place to live in, to have something like The Flash to escape to get some of that hope and fun that I love, is something I want to see in more comic book shows. I think with upcoming shows like Titans, Supergirl and more, we are already seeing full-fledged superhero shows coming and I think The Flash has been a big part of that.
Blaise: I just think that The Flash is confident and well-planned. They clearly know what the show is and where they want to take it in the future. They aren’t trying to do anything crazy or different, which is perfectly fine. The show is very direct and almost feels like it isn’t worried about what people think. In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s first season I felt like they were trying so hard to create something that was cool and hip while also relating to the Marvel Universe and it just was too much. Now they have restructured everything and, I think, already taken a few pages from The Flash by bringing in tons of comic book characters, villains, and events that people want to see. So yes, I think other shows should follow the model that The Flash (and Arrow) have created.
Chris: The main part of The Flash that I want to see other comic book series embrace is the show’s ability to have fun with its characters and storylines. This is a series that has a main character that isn’t bogged down with unnecessary angst. Barry sees his powers and his responsibility to his city as a gift that he’s happy to have, and it’s refreshing to have a character with a more positive outlook on life rather than another “tortured soul.” Essentially, The Flash doesn’t take itself too seriously, although it makes sure that the more dramatic moments of the show are given respect and care as well. More comic book series should attempt to find this balance between light-hearted fun and darker material, because you need both in order to have the best show possible.
What are you looking forward to the most when the show returns in January with all the major guest stars and arcs that they have been lining up?
Andy: There are literally over 20 things that I’m stoked for, but that would take all day so here are a few of them: The Rogues! You have no idea how big of a Prison Break fan I am, so getting to see Wentworth Miller being back as Captain Cold and bringing Dominic Purcell as Heat Wave is a huge geek moment for me. Of course, the mystery of Reverse-Flash and how that will play out. I would be a fool to not mention Mark freaking Hamill coming to the show as The Trickster because, he is Mark Hamill, do I need to say more? I think the second half is going to be in general, another solid half.
Blaise: I’m really excited to see Mark Hamill come onto the show as the Trickster. That will be a really fun episode to watch, especially with him in the role. Otherwise, I just want to see more Reverse Flash story. I hope that they follow the mold Arrow has created and reveal who is behind the mask by season’s end. It was awesome watching Oliver find out the identity of his arch enemy in Merlyn, so I would love to see Barry discover it’s Eddie and set up their future of face-offs.
Chris: I’m looking forward to more scenes between Joe and Barry, because, come on, those are just the best. I’m also excited for the return of Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold, the show digging deeper into what’s going on with Ronnie, Mark Hamill guest starring as The Trickster, and an even better showdown between Barry and Reverse Flash.
