It’s that time of the year again. The Travel Channel loves to explore haunting places in the weeks leading up to Halloween. This year’s line up of spooky travel shows includes specials including “Extreme Hotels: Haunted Hospitality” and “Vampires: Mysteries at the Museum”. “Ghost Adventures” several special episodes. These include “Hauntings at Vicksburg”, a 4 part special on the haunted Civil War site, and a 2 part special on Las Vegas’ “Museum of Madness” and the famous “Annabelle’s Curse”. In a lead up to Halloween, the Travel Channel will air “Haunted USA” every Sunday night taking us on a tour of some of the most haunted cities in the United States of America.
Here are 5 things to know about “Haunted USA” on the Travel Channel.
1. Exploring Haunted USA
The four part series airs every Sunday night through October. It takes us to some of the most haunted cities in the United States. These are some of the historically spookiest towns and cities in the country. The show will explore everything from haunted bars to haunted hotels. It will take us through places in the cities with great historical significance that many believe have been haunted since the founding of our country. These places have been visited by paranormal investigators and hauntings have been noted by visitors. “Haunted USA” is a chance for everyone to explore the spookiest places in our country’s history.
2. New Orleans
The first spot “Haunted USA” visits is New Orleans. Paranormal experiences include ghosts, psychic experiences and demons. New Orleans is considered by most to be the most haunted city in the USA. The city has seen war, fires and hurricanes.
3. Salem
Known as the “Witch City”, Salem, Massachusetts is one of the most haunted cities in America. The home of the Salem Witch Trials in the seventeenth century, many of those executed remain. The House of Seven Gables made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne is said to be haunted by the author’s cousin Susan Ingersoll who lived there. The Hawthorne Hotel was built in 1900. It is believed Bridget Bishop, the first woman executed for witchcraft haunts the hotel. Gallows Hill, the place where the executions took place is also haunted. It is believed Giles Corey haunts The Joshua Ward Home. He was stoned to death on the property which was built in 1750.
4. New York City
“Haunted USA” takes us to some haunted sights in the “Big Apple” which is filled with historical places where famous people may still reside after death. “The House of Death” is located in Greenwich Village was once home to Mark Twain who is believed to haunt the first floor and basement. Other paranormal evidence has been found in the townhome where a man murdered hid daughter in the 1980’s. The Dakota was built in 1884 and is best known as the home where John Lennon was shot and killed and as the scene of “Rosemary’s Baby”. The large gothic apartment building is creepy looking and many apparitions have been seen. The White Horse Tavern built in 1880 is believed haunted. One of the ghosts is poet Dylan Thomas who drank heavily there.
5. Savannah
Finally “Haunted USA” will take us to Savannah, Georgia where hauntings are common throughout the town. The Gribble House is the place where a triple axe murder took place in 1909. The building was replaced by a garage but the area is haunted by evil spirits and Civil War veterans. The 250 year old Pirate’s House has tunnels to the river running underneath. Voices and apparitions are often heard and seen coming from the tunnels. The Moon River Brewing Company is in a building built in 1864 and served as a hotel and a hospital during a yellow fever epidemic. The most frightening haunting at the restaurant is an evil spirit whom employees call Toby that haunts the basement.
