This past holiday season, Travel Channel blessed us with an amazing special to get us seeing snow in a whole new way. With “Best in Snow”, we were able to see the most miraculous and amazing snow sculptures that have been created this winter season. In this article, we are taking you behind the scenes of this Travel Channel special, and letting you know 5 things that you probably didn’t know about “Best in Snow”. So, with that said, let’s get started with our countdown.
It Is A One Episode Special:
Aside from popular belief, “Best in Snow” is actually just a one episode special for the season. However, Travel Channel is planning to release a “series” of different specials with similar aspects. For example, there will be a “Best in Sand”, “Best in Ice”, “Best in Pumpkins”, and several others as well. These will take place throughout various times during the year, as it fits accordingly.
It Mixed Competition With Leisure:
While the special was ultimately centered around the World Championship Snow Sculpting Competition, and those that were competing, there were also a few other individuals mentioned that have built truly amazing snow sculptures. The individuals who were mentioned aside from the competition aspect were located all throughout the United States, although one of the specific profiles was also located in Montreal. For many of these people that were featured, the snow sculpting is much more than a hobby, and has become a tradition that many people in their communities cherish during the grueling and bitter winter months.
The World Championship Snow Sculpting Competition For The Current Year Hasn’t Happened Yet:
That’s right. When you watched the “Best In Snow” special on Travel Channel, the competition that was taking place at the time was actually from the beginning of 2017, and last winter. The next World Championship Snow Sculpting Competition, which is always held in Breckenridge, Colorado, will take place January 22nd to January 29th, in just a few weeks. This competition is also international, meaning that people from all over the globe come to build these amazing sculptures and winter wonderland scenes for all to enjoy. This fact also leads into our next unknown secret from the television special.
“Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day” … And Neither Are These Sculptures:
It may have been easily noticeable during the television special, or maybe you noticed when we talked about the competition previously, but these sculptures aren’t built and perfected in merely one or two days. In fact, the duration of the competition, as we can see for the schedule of the upcoming 28th Annual World Championship Snow Sculpting Competition for 2018, the time limit for these sculptures is a full week. This allows for the sculptors and artists to perfect and make the most intricate of masterpieces out of the snow and ice that is available for them.
The Competition involves An Extra Week Prior To Get Everything In Order:
In case you weren’t aware, these artists that come to the competition aren’t just piling up a bunch of snow and then creating at whim. No — The competition staff has a technical week prior to the actual competition week. This technical week is meant for onlookers to see how the blocks of snow are built for the sculptors once they arrive, and many of these artists need hundreds of blocks in order to create their masterpieces. Plus if you are attending the competition in the audience, you can even volunteer to create a block or two for the competition itself.
With all of the beauty and wonder that is created and displayed in a snow or ice sculpture, we can only hope that the Travel Channel continues to make and release these television specials for their audience on a regular basis. If you would like more information on the World Championship Snow Sculpting Competition, or any of the snow sculpture creators that were previewed on the special, you can find links and information on the Travel Channel website and other outlets online.
