Demian Bichir has definitely tried his best to break into American movies in the past but didn’t have a whole lot of success in doing so. In Mexico however he had a great amount of luck, winning awards and becoming a star as he’d wanted to do for so long. The difference between America and Mexico isn’t much when it comes to opportunity other than the fact that in America it is fairly cutthroat and not always that fair for those that make the attempt. Finally though, when Demian broke through he managed to show everyone just what he could do.
The results were pretty impressive.
5. He’s played the parts of two Latin revolutionaries.
He’s managed to portray Fidel Castro in Che: Part One and Che: Part Two. He’s also taken on the role of Emiliano Zapata in Zapata: Amor en rebeldia. Taking on such iconic roles isn’t really the hard part, but making them work and making other people believe that they’re convincing in a historical and cinematic sense is something else. Demian has definitely made a mark in cinema buy playing such characters.
4. He’s the second Mexican to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar.
Anthony Quinn was the first, but it’s an honor really to be nominated for an Oscar at all despite one’s racial background. In all honest there are a few Mexican actors that should have been considered over the years but have been either snubbed or not even considered for the honor. It’s about time the Oscars really started learning the meaning of the term ‘diversity’.
3. He sent each of his fellow nominees a bottle of white tequila during the 2012 Academy Awards.
It could have been meant as a consolation prize or a congratulations since really, alcohol is kind of a universal gift unless you give it to an alcoholic. Then it’s kind of a taunt or an insult that might not have been meant but would be taken the wrong way all the same. But still, this kind of gesture is something rather nice from a fellow actor that understands how to have a good time and to just kick back once in a while and either enjoy the win or take the loss with some grace.
2. His parents had roots in show business.
His mother was an actress and his father was a theater director so it’s obvious that there is some history of show business there. It could have been that Demian either wanted this or wanted to see if he could do something else rather than go into what his parents would likely support. Some people would have gone for the stage immediately with such support but others might have wanted the same, to see what else was out there.
1. At age 13 he became a member of the National Theater Company of Mexico.
So it’s pretty obvious what he wanted to do from the start. He just needed a push in the right direction, and obviously he got it at one point.
Sometimes that’s all it takes.
