Betty Buckley is an American actress who has shown up on the stage, the TV screen, and the movie screen. Recently, it has been revealed that she will be playing the part of Patricia Arias on Supergirl, which has some rather interesting implications because her character will be the mother of Reign, who will be a main character in Season 3.
Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Betty Buckley:
Competed in Beauty Pageants
At one point in time, Buckley competed in a number of beauty pageants. For example, she was Miss Fort Worth, a runner-up for Miss Texas, and a contestant in the Miss America pageant. It is interesting to note that Buckley was spotted by a talent scout when she was participating in the Miss America pageant, which contributed to the successful launching of her subsequent career.
Had Broadway Debut in 1776
In 1969, Buckley made the decision to head to New York City to pursue a career as a professional actor. On her first day, she managed to land the role of Martha Jefferson in the initial production of the musical called 1776. Like its name suggests, said musical was focused on the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with a particular interest in John Addams’s contribution to the entire sequence of events.
Originated the Role of Grizabella in Cats
Speaking of which, one of Buckley’s most famous roles might have been Grizabella in the initial production of Cats, which won her a Tony Award in 1983. Character-wise, it is interesting to note that Grizabella was never included in Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, though the character was indeed based on T.S. Eliot’s writings. The gist of it is that the character appeared in one of Eliot’s poems, but in the end, he decided that it was too sad a poem to be included in a book that was meant for children.
Practices Meditation
Buckley is an excellent example of the actors and actresses who use meditation to provide the best performances possible as well as help keep their lives under excellent control. It is interesting to note that she has even taught the use of meditation in a remarkable number of both courses and workshops at the University of Texas at Arlington as well as other locations to people who want to improve their acting skills. In her case, Buckley practices spiritual meditation as opposed to the non-spiritual forms that have been becoming more and more popular in recent times.
Saved Rufus Wainwright’s Life
On one occasion, Buckley saved the life of Rufus Wainwright by preventing him from drowning in a swimming pool at a hotel. For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Wainwright is a singer, a songwriter, and a composer who has produced multiple albums’ worth of original music in addition to his work on numerous compilations and soundtracks. In fact, it is interesting to note that he has even written an opera, while a second opera inspired by the Roman Emperor Hadrian is expected to come out in 2018.
