Five Things You Didn’t Know about BBC’s New Show “Class”

The Doctor Who franchise consists of more than the Doctor Who TV shows. For example, it has had a number of spin-offs such as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Class is the latest spin-off in the Doctor Who franchise, being a teen drama centered around five of the students and staff at Coal Hill Academy who have been tasked with handling a number of alien threats by the Doctor.

Here are five things that you may or may not have known about BBC’s new TV show Class:

The Students Are Six-Formers

One of the main characters is a teacher, while the other four main characters are six-formers. For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a six-former is a student in the final one to three years of their secondary education. The term originated from an earlier system in which form was used to refer to the backless benches that students would sit on, with each bench being reserved for a particular year.

Mix of Aliens and Humans

Two of the main characters are aliens, while the rest are humans. In brief, Charlie Smith is an alien prince pretending to be a human after another race of aliens killed his entire species but for him. Meanwhile, Miss Andrea Quill is the physics teacher as well as another alien who happens to be the last of her species, who is being forced to watch over the other four main characters by the Doctor as punishment for causing the death of a student while pretending to be a teacher.

None of the Main Characters Are Perfectly Normal

With that said, all of the main characters have something that causes them to stand out. For example, Ram Singh lost a leg to the Shadow Kin in the first episode, which has since been replaced with a robotic prosthetic provided by the Doctor. Furthermore, April MacLean shares a heart with the King of the Shadow Kin, while Tanya Adeola is a child prodigy.

Coal Hill Academy Is a Longstanding Location

Coal Hill Academy is a longstanding location in the Doctor Who franchise. In fact, it showed up in the first episode “An Unearthly Child” in 1963, serving as the school attended by Susan Foreman, the First Doctor’s granddaughter. Furthermore, it was the school at which two of the major characters, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, taught. Since that time, it has continued to serve as an exemplar of normality in the otherwise fantastical franchise, thus serving to highlight the more fantastical elements all the more through the stark contrast.

Might Be Cancelled

Unfortunately, Class did not manage to draw in a lot of viewers. As a result, there are some serious questions about whether it will continue or not in the future. In fact, there is a rumor that the BBC has cancelled the TV show after just a single season, but so far, the BBC has refused to confirm its veracity, saying only that they are stilling considering Class‘s future at the moment.
