There are good Adam Sandler movies (yes there are) and there are those that you watch even when he’s absolutely unbearable. The latter are those that probably should never have been made in the first place no matter who decided to like them. For a long while Adam Sandler constantly played the role of the manchild that refused to grow up and wanted to just party and be wild. Since he’s started to get older he’s taken on more adult roles and actually matured into a decent actor for the most part. Some people still don’t like him and that’s their choice, but there are still those movies in which Sandler just went overboard and became absolutely horrible, whether it was the role, the way he played it, or the circumstances that led to the horrid plot line. It’s not all really nice to bash anyone for their movies, so let’s put it this way: some of these Sandler movies could have done with a sharp dose of reality before being filmed. Had such a thing happened we might have been spared from the rather lackluster performance they gave at the box office.
Keep in mind this list is subjective, so if you find one of your favorites on here try not to be offended.
5. Going Overboard
This can be forgiven just a little bit since it was Sandler’s first foray onto the big screen. But overall it was cursed with such a low budget that it was a stinker from start to finish. A person could possibly forgive a lot of it, but the acting was just as horrible and the plot line jumped all over the place like an architect trying to draw out plans after pulling an all-nighter while main-lining caffeine. Overall the movie was kind of a mess and while it was his first, it was undoubtedly one of his worst and most unbearable since he just wasn’t that funny.
4. You Don’t Mess With the Zohan
It’s hard to get away from the stereotypes that were thrown into this movie because, quite honestly, that’s what the whole movie was based on. From the Israeli touches to the fact that the main bad guy is a white man looking to ruin the neighborhood and build up some gaudy downtown area fit only for the ultra-rich. Sandler’s never really been one to shy away from making a statement but this one swung for the fences and kind of came up short, as in really short, like being dumped one hundred feet from the fence and left for dead short. This movie is barely remembered by many people and has kind of been left all on its own.
3. Jack and Jill
Like just about everyone in Hollywood Sandler’s career has hit a couple of low points during which he really tried to get people back on his side by making movies that were similar in some way to the slapstick that he started out with. The trouble with this is that as he’s gotten older the slapstick method isn’t quite working for him any longer. Maybe by the time he gets to be as old as Mel Brooks was when he really started belting them out it’ll work. But then again, it might just be time to head for the drama section and call it a day. He’s still a great comedian, but using the same stuff over and over just isn’t working.
2. Funny People
So many people thought that this was going to be a straight up comedy that it was more than a little disappointing when they watched the movie and found out how heavily-laden it was with drama. The story wasn’t horrible, but the expectations going into this movie kind of ruined it for a lot of people. Plus the fact that Sandler’s character played the part of such a jerk was also a bit of a shock since in most of his movies he tends to be the good guy, or at least the guy you want to root for even if he’s not all that great to start with. In this film he was just awful, and even worse he reveled in it.
1. Little Nicky
This was just a train wreck from the word ‘go’. The story had a lot of promise since anything approaching the theological debate of heaven and hell can be extremely interesting. But unfortunately Sandler made this into one long-running gag that kind of fell flat after the first jokes were told and didn’t stop until the eye-rolling ending. First off, an angel and the devil, THE devil, producing a son is something that you believe could work in a comedy, and yet it doesn’t. Then the devil’s three sons vying for the power that their father isn’t going to bequeath them just yet leads into a battle that’s just straight up, well, silly.
Sandler has made a lot of movies, but these have to be some of the worst.
