This Is Us is a show that definitely keeps fans on their toes. You don’t only get the chance to see the characters in their day-to-day activities on a current time table, but you also see flashes of them from their childhood, as well as when they are much older. There’s no doubt that the show’s writers and show runners have created an intricately woven fabric of storytelling here, but they don’t like to reveal too much too soon. As such, a number of theories have started circulating among fans as they try to figure it all out. Below are five of the most popular theories among the dedicated audience that this show has gained.
1. Jack’s brother died when he was in Vietnam, saving none other than Jack himself
Fans of the show know that Nicky, Jack’s brother, is a sore subject with Jack. He hardly ever discussed him and there might be good reason for it. There’s been a long-standing theory that when the two were serving together in Vietnam, one of two things happened. One possibility is that Nicky died saving Jack’s life. The other is that Nicky was injured and Jack was unable to save him for one reason or another. Either way, you could see how this could end up being something that’s difficult to talk about. It might be the exact reason why Jack was always so tight-lipped whenever it came to discussing Nicky.
2. Nicky isn’t really dead
A lot of people do prescribe to the above theory, but there are just as many that think that Nicky is not even dead. Instead, they prefer to believe that the two brothers had some type of falling out and it was just too painful for Jack to discuss. Clearly, Nicky was not in his life so something had to have happened. Either he’s no longer living or the two weren’t speaking. Both of these theories are extremely popular. Perhaps the reason some people prescribed to this theory is that it always left an opportunity for the two brothers to work things out at some point in the future.
3. Randall might have a sibling
A while back, show runners were teasing fans by circulating a picture on Twitter and other social media platforms with a baby that was hinted to be a long-lost sibling of Randalls, one that he isn’t even aware of. Of course, this got fans talking. A lot of them believe that Randall does indeed have a sibling that’s out there somewhere but some of them just don’t think that story washes. For them, it’s a lot more likely that something else is going on, perhaps even that the picture is one of Randall’s own child.
4. Fans have their own take on the identity of “her”
There have been tons of theories circulated about who this person actually is. One of them that has gained a lot of ground indicates that it just might be Beth. In the season two finale, a lot of people think that they’re talking about going to see her and that she’s on her deathbed. As it turns out, season three reveals that this isn’t the case, at least as far as Beth’s dying goes. However, many fans still believe that she is the person being discussed and there’s some other reason for all of the melancholy.
5. There’s a theory about Rebecca, too
On the other hand, there are a lot of theories that this could be Rebecca that’s being discussed and that she will not survive for one reason or another. This largely comes from the fact that when they did the scenes of their future selves, Rebecca was nowhere to be found. That being said, neither Annie nor Beth were in those scenes, either.
This is just a handful of the theories that circulate all the time about this show. Fans are always coming up with new ideas and are adjusting existing ones to fit whatever happens from one episode to the next. One thing is certain, fans of the show have almost as much fun putting all of these theories together and then seeing who is right as they do watching each episode. When it’s all said and done, there’s no doubt that at least some of these ideas will be proven incorrect. There’s just no way around it. It’s impossible that they can all be right but at this point in time, they do all have merit. Part of the fun is trying to figure out the clues that show up along the way.
