It’s difficult to have a good film without good music. It would be like having a dry sandwich and nothing to wash it down with. Music helps to move the plot forward and is an integral part of any movie. In fact I would even argue that a crappy movie with great music can often show up some good movies with crappy music. Speaking of music, the appearance of your favorite band or musician makes a movie even more memorable.
Here are five of our favorite band cameos in 1990s movies.
1. “Singles”

“Singles” is the 1992 romantic comedy starring Bridge Fonda, Matt Dillon and Kyra Sedgwick. It showcases the Seattle grunge movement in music that was popular in the era. What gave the film an added punch of excitement was the appearance of the members of Pearl Jam as bandmates to Dillon. Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament help Dillon to make up the fictional band called Citizen Dick. Other cameos in the film include Soundgarden, Mudhoney and Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees. These guys can act as well.
2. “Clueless”
This film was popular with teenage girls because of the fashion aspect. Brittany Murphy played the role of Tai Faser. One of the most famous scenes in the movie took place at a frat party. Tai takes a tumble down the stairs and then we hear the Mighty Mighty Bosstones start performing “Where’d You Go.” The timing could not have been more perfect. Whoever built the cameo into this scene is a genius. It even evoked a response from Cher who described the group as “kickin.”
3. “10 Things I Hate About You”
The 1999 film “10 Things I Hate About You” is a romantic movie that features Heath Ledger as a gorgeous bad boy named Patrick who wants to win the heart of his high school crush. The film rocketed Ledger to fame. The group Letters to Cleo’s popular song “I want You to Want Me” was the perfect song to move the story along because this is how he really felt about the girl. The band made a spectacular cameo appearance at the end of the movie. Patrick had hired them to make an appearance and perform at the school dance.
4. “American Pie”
This film caught on as an American favorite with its ribald humor and off the wall comedy. Blink 182 appeared briefly in a cameo. Jim’s sexual misadventure that was caught on video was accidentally shared with the world. It went viral on the internet. The Blink 182 band was practicing when one of the members came across the funny video and called the other guys to come over and see.
5. “Wayne’s World”
The 1992 comedy “Wayne’s World” featured a cameo appearance by the world famous artist Alice Cooper. In the movie, Cooper is their idol. Wayne and Garth find their way backstage so they can get to meet him in person. Alice Cooper appears of himself and in the scene he gives the two a history lesson about the city of Milwaukee.
