A ‘First Wives Club’ TV Reboot is in the Works

‘The First Wives Club’ was a huge hit in the 1990s as not only was it highly comical, there were both men and women all over the world who could resonate with the storyline. Although it is now over 20 years since the release of this movie, there are now talks of a television series being written based on the film.

The original movie was released in 1996 and was directed by Hugh Wilson. It was based on the novel of the same name by Olivia Goldsmith which was published in 1992. It was adapted into a screenplay by Robert Harling. Diane Keaton narrated the movie and also played Annie MacDuggan-Paradis, one of the leading roles. The other two leading roles were played by Bette Midler, as Brenda Morelli-Cushman, and Goldie Hawn in the role of Elise Eliot-Atchinson. The women’s husbands were played by Stephen Collins, Dan Hedaya, and Victor Garber, respectively.

The story is about three women who have ex-husbands that lied and cheated, all three of whom now have new partners. The three women set out to get their revenge and bring down their ex-husbands in hilarious ways. Rather than try to get revenge alone, the three women support each other in making sure that they all come out on top.

When the movie was released on September 20, 1996, it was an instant success. Both the public and the critics received the film positively and ‘The First Wives Club’ had excellent reviews. The success of the movie was further proven by the box office figures. The movie was made on a budget of $30 million but grossed $181 million at the worldwide box office. This level of success was a surprise to all who were involved in this film.

As ‘The First Wives Club’ was such a big hit, it is hardly surprising that there are now plans to create a television series based on the characters from the movie. At the moment, only a half-hour pilot is planned and this is being written by Tracy Oliver, the writer of ‘Girls Trip’. It is intended that the pilot will air on Paramount Network, which is known as Spike until the network is rebranded in January 2018.

According to the rumors, the television series will loosely follow the same storyline as the movie although some changes are likely. Also, just like the movie, the television series will be based in New York City.

This is not the first time that a reboot of ‘The First Wives Club’ has been planned. Last year, a completely different project was in development. This was a television series remake of the film which was intended TV Land. This series starred Megan Hilty, Vanessa Lachey, and Alyson Hannigan. Unfortunately, the network decided to pass on the project but Paramount bought the rights to the concept of the series.

As yet, there have been no further details released about the development of a ‘The First Wives Club’ television series so who will take on the main roles remains a mystery. However, there are some suggestions that the cast of ‘Girls Trip’ is well worth considering for the roles.
