Avatar came out in 2009. Considering its success, it should come as no surprise to learn that there have been plans for a continuation of the franchise for a long, long time. In fact, James Cameron has stated that he has planned out a total of five movies, which are not meant to be five separate stories but rather five parts of a greater whole. This has some rather interesting implications for what interested individuals can expect from the future of the franchise, with an excellent example being how the character of Colonel Quaritch will be making a return in not just Avatar 2 but also the other two movies that will follow in its footsteps.
Regardless, while Avatar 2 has been delayed for a number of reasons, it is interesting to note that filming for the movie has at least started up, meaning that interested individuals can expect to see it released sometime in the not so distant future. Furthermore, this means that a fair amount of information has been released in recent times, with one excellent example being the casting for the new movie.
What Has Been Revealed about the Cast of Avatar 2?
One point of interest about the casting for the new movie is the fact that it will be featuring a lot of younger actors, which is a significant departure from the casting for its predecessor. In total, the people behind Avatar 2 have revealed a total of seven younger actors who have been cast for the movie, which is paired with a fair amount of information about who they will be playing. For example, some of the actors will be playing the children of Jake Sully and Neytiri from the first movie. Meanwhile, some of the other actors will be playing the children belonging to a different clan of Na’vi, who happen to live in a much different environment in the form of huge reefs situated out in the ocean. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that these actors won’t be making it onto the movie screen with their real appearances but rather as CGI characters. With that said, it is interesting to note that one of the actors will actually be playing a human as opposed to a Na’vi character who has grown up in Hell’s Gate, which has some rather interesting implications regarding what we can expect from Avatar 2.
Regardless, the casting choices make some things clear. First, they are making their connections with the previous movie clear, thus ensuring a sense of familiarity for people who might want to watch the upcoming movie once it has been released. Second, they serve to show that Avatar 2 will be taking the franchise in a new direction, which in turn, means a lot of new narrative possibilities. Summed up, Avatar 2 will not be attempting to retrace the steps of its predecessor but instead head out in a new direction, which should serve as reassurance to interested individuals who are concerned that it will be nothing but more of the same. With that said, Avatar 2 is expected to come out towards the end of 2020, while the rest of the sequels are expected to come out in 2021, 2024, and 2025, which is a rather ambitious schedule to say the least.
