Empire Review: See Ya Never Yoko!

Empire

Tonight’s Empire marked the end of one character’s run in order to refocus on the Lyon’s family dynamic. While it rights one wrong in the family, the pressure is on as each of the Lyons get back to what they do best-declaring war on each other.

Being out of Empire has rejuvenated Lucious’s creativity. Since he can’t go back to Empire until Hakeem and Cookie find a way to oust Camilla, he instead focuses his energy on his new music video.

Cookie is working on all cylinders this week. She is juggling her new job as Head of A&R at Empire while trying to keep Lucious and her boys under control. Jamal is facing heavy backlash from his fans after they find out that he slept with a woman. Jameson tells Jamal that it was Lucious who first told him about Skye. Jamal thinks that Lucious spread the word about Skye in order to sabotage Jamal’s chances at winning the ASA they are pitted against each other for. Jamal fires back the best way he knows how, with a powerful song which not so subtly lists all of Lucious’s faults. A reporter named Harper Scott is digging around the Lyon’s drama. After Jamal drops the bombshell that Lucious Lyon isn’t his father’s real name, Lucious takes the opportunity to speak his truth to the public. He calls Harper back to give her the exclusive on how he became Lucious Lyon in the first place.

In the aftermath of their miscarriage Andre and Rhonda are trying to recover. Andre convinces Rhonda to go talk to his pastor for counseling, where she makes a point of accusing Andre of needing to recalibrate his bipolar meds. This may or may not be the case, since Andre is mostly in a lot of pain over the loss of his son. His brothers write him a beautiful song to show their support. Rhonda can’t put her trust in faith the way her husband does, so she decides to go back to work for the new fashion line Camilla is putting together for Empire. Rhonda is the one to witness Camilla in a full-blown meltdown trying to keep her wife at a distance. Rhonda is the dutiful daughter-in-law and runs straight to Cookie with the information the family needs to put a plan in motion. It seems that Mimi genuinely cares about Camilla, though we already knew that Camilla was just in the marriage for her power.

Hakeem revels in his new title of CEO. It’s all Cookie can do to try to keep Hakeem under control while working with Camilla in order to take her down. The family is not impressed when Hakeem changes the Empire logo with his own face on it. Camilla is not impressed that Hakeem is keeping Laura around. When Camilla threatens to cut Tiana’s tour for being overbudget, Cookie suggests they add Mirage A Trois to the tour as her opening act. This works just fine for Camilla since it gets Laura out of the way, but Hakeem is upset that the CEO was left out of the decision. Hakeem genuinely wants the opportunity to prove himself as CEO, and while he doesn’t want the family taking away his title, he can agree with them that Camilla has to go. To that end, he invites Camilla over for a little private time, which he tapes without her knowledge and sends to her very possessive wife. Hakeem’s plan works like a charm. Though he could not have expected that in the aftermath Camilla would murder Mimi. Lucious walks in as Camilla is covering up the crime and forces her to drink the poison herself or else be carted off the prison. That is the end of Empire’s Yoko!

Cookie’s Quotables:

  • “You can go back to being useless and stop wearing your grandaddy’s suits”-Cookie has no use for Lucious’s slimy lawyer.
  • “I don’t care if you gotta get a rocket to launch her crazy a** to the moon!”- Cookie snaps at Andre after he delivers bad news about Camilla’s firm control over Empire

Will Cookie be able to pull the family together now that Camilla is gone, or will her efforts fall on deaf ears?
