Emergence is a new show that can be found on ABC. For those who are curious, it is classified as a mystery thriller. However, since Emergence has just started up, it remains to be seen what kind of mystery thriller it will prove to be. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Emergence:
1. It Was Developed At NBC
It has been reported that Emergence was developed at NBC rather than ABC. In short, what happened was that the show managed to make enough of a positive impression for NBC to order a pilot. However, the pilot failed to cross the final threshold. Fortunately for the people involved with Emergence, ABC was apparently dissatisfied with its own slate for the season, which is why it picked up the show instead.
2. Some People Have Been Making Comparisons to Lost
Perhaps unsurprisingly, there are some people who have been making comparisons to Lost. After all, both of the shows are focused on their respective mysteries, meaning that their respective audiences should have a fair amount of overlap between them. With that said, Emergence is by no means a one-for-one copy of Lost, so it should have its own particular selling points as well.
3. Centered On Two Characters
The two most important characters on Emergence are a woman named Jo Evans and a child named Piper. What happens is that the police chief Jo comes upon Piper, who seems to be the sole survivor of a plane crash. Unfortunately, Piper has no recollection of either who she is or what happened in the incident, which presumably plays an important part in convincing Jo to take her in. However, it isn’t too long before it becomes apparent that there is much more than what meets the eye, not least because Jo is determined to look into the truth of things.
4. Set in Peconic Bay
Emergence is set in a place called Peconic Bay that can be found on Long Island in the state of New York. Technically, Peconic Bay isn’t one but rather two bays called the Great Peconic Bay and the Little Peconic Bay, which are separated from one another by Robins Island. In the past, the place was popular for fishing. Nowadays, Peconic Bay has a reputation for both boating and sailing as well.
5. Very Reminiscent of Conspiracy Theories
The first episode of Emergence took a lot of inspiration from conspiracy theories. For example, people claiming to be government agents is a popular element in conspiracy theories, particularly when combined with a lack of either fingerprints or other identifying features. Likewise, the idea of devices implanted in people’s heads is a very popular common element as well, which is perhaps unsurprising when they are looking more and more plausble.
6. Piper Seems to Have Superpowers
There are some indications that Piper might have superpowers, which would presumably explain why people are interested in her. In particular, there is strong evidence of this when a man and a woman pretending to be her parents kidnap her before racing off in a car. One example would be how the car crashes without any apparent cause, which could be a sign that Piper possesses some kind of telekinesis. Another example would be how the car crash kills both the man and the woman but leaves Piper perfectly fine, which further strengthens that hypothesis. With that said, it is still much too soon to be forming concrete theories about what is going on because new episodes will produce new material to mull over.
7. Not As Cliched As It Could Be
One of the nice things about Emergence is that it isn’t as cliched as it could have been. For instance, Jo is a divorcee. As a result, it would have been very easy for the people behind the show to write her as a childless woman who latches on to Piper because of “unfulfilled maternal instincts” or some similar cliche. However, that isn’t the case because of two reasons. One, Jo already has a teenage daughter named Mia. Two, Jo doesn’t jump to adopt Piper. Thanks to this, the show lets Jo’s job as a police chief come to the fore, which in turn, puts an increased emphasis on the show’s sense of mystery.
8. Jo Is Played By Allison Tolman
With that said, even the best writing for a show isn’t particularly meaningful unless it is acted out with competence. Luckily, there are reviewers who have mentioned the cast being an upside for Emergence. For those who are curious, Jo is played by Allison Tolman, who they might know best because of her role as the police officer Molly Solverson on Fargo. In the past, Tolman has been known to turn down stock roles in preference for something more unusual, which sounds like it could be promising for her character on Emergence.
9. Piper Is Played By Alexa Swinton
The role of Piper is played by Alexa Swinton, about whom good things have been said as well. This is encouraging because Piper isn’t a static character but rather someone who seems to have agency of her own. As a result, good acting is needed for the role, particularly since it is such a prominent one on the show.
10. Megacorps Might Be Involved
Much remains unknown about what interested individuals can expect from Emergence. However, there are indications that megacorp shenanigans could be involved, seeing as how one of the recurring characters is a “charming but ruthless” multi-billionaire named Richard Kindred. Amusingly, his corporation has outright been described as a tech company with a “mysterious and very secret agenda.” With that said, it will be interesting to see whether this very blatant marketing was meant to mislead the viewers about what is really going on or not.
