Recently, reports came out stating that President Donald Trump has been telling people that the Access Hollywood tape is a fake. For people who don’t remember the election campaign in perfect detail, the Access Hollywood tape was the one that featured a conversation between Trump and Billy Bush, which featured much talked-about quotes such as “Grab them by the pussy” and “I moved on her like a bitch.” On its own, the claim would be ridiculous because Trump was captured on camera saying those things, but considering that he actually acknowledged the truth of the video during the election campaign by calling what he said as nothing but “locker room banter,” the whole thing reaches into the realm of the surreal.
Why Is He Saying This Now?
Some people have speculated that this reversal is part of the pattern that resulted in Trump supporting Roy Moore, who is running for the position of senator in the state of Alabama. Simply put, the speculation is that Trump saw the whole incident with the Access Hollywood tape as an undeserved attack on him. As a result, he has made a decision to support Moore because he sees the current accusations against the senatorial candidate as an extension of what had been said about him in his election.
However, it is important to note that Trump might be supporting Moore out of a sense of pragmatism as well. At the moment, the Republicans have a very slim majority in the senate, meaning that passing its bills would become even more challenging for the Trump administration if the Democrats manage to pick up a senatorial seat in the state of Alabama of all places. As a result, it is possible that Trump is supporting Moore because he wants to maintain the current state of things even if that will come at a high cost for the Republicans as a whole. After all, if Moore reaches the senate, the Republican leadership is going to have an unenviable choice between two unpalatable options.
On the one hand, they could kick out Moore, which has a high chance of kicking off a civil war within the part. On the other hand, they could let Moore sit among them, which would enable the Democrats to rake them over the coals for sacrificing their higher principles in exchange for temporal power in so blatant a manner. For that matter, even if they choose to let Moore stay, they are likely to see some conflicts within the party because Moore does not have a reputation for being the forgiving sort, meaning that he is going to go after the Republican leadership for dropping him once story after story started coming out.
With that said, it is also possible that looking at the potential motives for what Trump says might not be a particularly fruitful path to pursue. The current President of the United States has said a great deal that would be considered outrageous under normal circumstances and will probably say a great deal more in the future, but often, what he says seems to be based more on his ego and emotions than any sort of strategic thinking. As a result, it is possible that the whole thing is just pure id.
