Dominion 1.06 Review: “Black Eyes Blue”

dominion4

When I was done watching this episode of Dominion, I wouldn’t say that it had brought several plot lines to their conclusion because it hadn’t. Alex, the Chosen One, is still training with Michael. Claire is still preparing for her place in the Senate. Michael is still looking out for Vega and its inhabitants. However, with this episode, the viewers saw somewhat of a moving forward of all of those storylines. It had Alex try to further his training by trying to “evict,” or remove an angel soul, from an eight-ball. It show Claire sit down to a meeting with her father and Akira, the representative from Helena. It revealed to the viewers the backdoors politics, the wheeling and trading Michael has to do to get the things he needs to train the Chosen One. Finally, you saw all of them come together. I liked it.

We’re going to look at two storylines in particular- Claire’s and Alex’s. Michael seems unaffected by his (or maybe he just hasn’t shown it yet?) and it didn’t really seem to go anywhere. As for David, Whele, and the glorification of Gabriel, it was painfully obvious at the end of the last episode whose cloth that was. I just never foresaw David breaking Whele, literally, in Gabriel’s name. Getting back to the two important storylines, Alex seems to be a free-thinking Chosen One. He’s not just someone who goes out there and kills angels, problem solved. While he usually does go on hunts for them, he stops before he kills them. The other security guard wouldn’t have done that. If he hadn’t, he never would have realized that the one he was supposed to kill was Claire’s mother. Yes, he is training with Michael. Yes, he is translating the tattoos on his body to learn more. This doesn’t stop him from mindlessly killing anyone though. In the last episode, he didn’t want to hurt Michael so he didn’t use all of his training of looking for the shadows. If he had, Michael very well could’ve gotten harmed. He is also willing to try new things, even if Michael says they’re a waste a time. Even when he’s right, at least Alex can say he tried.

As for Claire, she may not have wanted it in the beginning, but by the end of the episode she is ready to take control of Vega. She is becoming more and more of a political figure that everybody trusts. In the beginning, she was willing to sit down with her father and Akira, ready to set out terms for peace. In the end, she knew that no know could know about her mom so she killed her. Does she like what she’s doing all the time? No. She can’t. No one can enjoy taking someone’s life away but she knows that as the future leader of Vega, this is what has to happen. Do I like seeing her do this stuff? No, but I do like seeing the person she’s becoming.

I am looking forward to next week’s episode. At this point, we don’t know much about Michael except for the fact that he’s an angel who fought for us in the war. They say the next episode will show more about his origins and beliefs. The reason that these are good episode is because while the viewers may see more episodes like this because tonight, they could go with a thruway episodes that while not essential the story but is still interesting.
