The Death of Superman is bringing out a pretty big cast list that includes some very well-known names. As a lot of comic buffs already know the death of Superman arc was something that took people by surprise even if they hadn’t been reading the comics since they were kids. This is Superman after all, the guy that nothing but kryptonite can kill. He can move mountains, literally, and he just can’t be beat unless someone knows how to target his hard to find weaknesses. But somehow a guy that looks like a cross between Hulk Hogan and the grey Hulk beat him into submission and then proceeded to keep beating him. This was one fictional death that sent shockwaves throughout the world since it wasn’t believed to be possible.
The cast is going to include Jerry O’Connell as Superman/Clark Kent, Rebecca Romijn as Lois Lane, and Rainn Wilson as Lex Luthor. There will be several other noted actors that will be taking on the voices of the heroes in the Justice League, rounding out the animated production as it’s scheduled to hit this summer. The follow-up to this, the Reign of the Supermen, was not quite as popular in the comics since it served to show that Superman would never really die and that DC, like Marvel, wouldn’t dare just let go of its biggest cash cow. There were so many different explanations within the various comics that depicted the rise of the new Supermen that a lot of fans couldn’t help but groan and roll their eyes as they figured that this was only typical. The death of Superman could have only been transitory at best since of course, comic book characters don’t die that easily. If they do it’s usually because they weren’t that great to begin with or they’ve reached the end of their arc and the writers can’t find anything to do with them that hasn’t been done before.
But with Superman the death and resurrection had a tremendous effect on the man of steel’s reputation. That Superman could die was hard enough for a lot of people to expect, but that he would be brought back simply because DC had to have seen a glimpse of their future without him was even harder. It was almost as if DC had dared themselves to do something drastic and after trying to hold out for months, not even a year, they decided that Superman needed to come back. He’s simply worth too much to the company and despite having someone that could take up his mantle he’s still the hero that everyone seems to want. Supergirl could easily fill his shoes in terms of power and intelligence, but when it comes to marketability she falls just a bit short.
The animated version of the Death of Superman is bound to amaze those that haven’t read the story. The only thing to remember, obviously, is that Superman does eventually die but not to worry, he comes back. Comic magic.
