It seems as if half of the planet’s population is going through the football fever with FIFA World Cup 2018 taking place. From a man going out of his way to “attend” the championship, to employing everyone possible just so one could know the results, we see a story after story. However, this one, shared by Hélio Fonseca de Araújo, is one that could win over even the person who hates football.
On June 23, Hélio uploaded a video showing his friend, Carlos, who is deaf and blind, watching a game between Brazil and Costa Rica. Cheering for their national team, Brazilian men found a way around Carlos’ disability to let him enjoy the game that he’s so passionate about.
Carlos was born deaf and began losing his eyesight at the age of 14. He was later diagnosed with Usher syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects seeing and hearing. Now a 27-year-old Carlos can still enjoy the World Cup with the help of his friends, after Hélio constructed a miniature football pitch. By touching the field and letting his friends guide his hands, Carlos is able to “see” the game as it’s being played.
