This year’s Daytime Emmy Awards are a week away, and we’ve got our takes on the frontrunners in the Daytime Drama categories. This past week the Television Academy released the storyline clips submitted for this year’s Daytime Emmy’s. Before the winners are announced, we’ve got our take on who should take home the trophies. The Bold and the Beautiful‘s Scott Clifton, Days of Our Lives‘s Billy Flynn and Vincent Irizarry, and The Young and the Restless‘s Peter Bergman and Kristoff St. John are nominated in the Lead Actor category. We have our pick for the frontrunner, as well as who comes up a very close second should the Academy not share our opinion.
This was another tough one to pinpoint. Here again I’m going to have to go with on the premise of seeing the actors perform in a way they hadn’t before, and part of it has a lot to do with their scene partners. The race was tight, but I’d give it to Scott Clifton. He’s already a winner and has been powerful as Liam Spencer, but there wasn’t a fan alive who wasn’t proud of Liam finally taking control of his life. This is not difficult for a character whose memory returns after being brainwashed. Liam has been a wishy-washy character in the past, so it was wonderful to see Clifton turn him around and let loose the anger he was entitled to.
Should Clifton not take the win, I’d like to see Billy Flynn joyously take the prize as a first timer in this category. He showed the depths of grief one man felt losing his father and his wife in the same year. Showing grief loudly is common, but showing quiet grief is something magical. Something about Flynn’s scenes with the late Joseph Mascolo was magical. In large part this was Mascolo himself, but a lesser actor would not have been able to lead that conversation on equal footing.
