Maybe it’s because the franchise is owned by Disney now, but the ‘dark’ secrets behind the scenes of Star Wars lack the kind of gut-wrenching punch that some other films have become know for. Honestly the darkest secrets about this movie are more like gossip that people would talk about because they find it interesting, not facts that are hidden away because they might damage someone’s psyche if they were to be released into the public. There are a lot of things about Star Wars that people know now that have opened their eyes a little wider and made them go ‘hmm’, but so far nothing has ever really managed to seem so scandalous that it couldn’t be told in any kind of company.
Here are just a few of the ‘dark’ secrets that Star Wars had to offer.
3. Mark Hamill didn’t know about Darth Vader being Luke’s father until moments before the shot was taken.
Oooh, spooky. It seems like the idea of Vader being Luke’s father is worse than Hamill finding out just before he had to do the scene to be honest. It would certainly make the scene go a bit different as Hamill likely had to assimilate this fact and play it up as much as he could. But really this was one of the greatest twists in all of movie history since all the awful things Vader had done to that point made this revelation so much worse. This would mean that he’d tortured his own daughter, he killed Luke’s mentor, who was also his friend and former master, and was responsible for helping to kill off the Jedi order. That’s a lot to take in within that short span of time, but it seems like Hamill made all those emotions fit just perfectly.
2. Mark Hamill got into a car crash and had to have reconstructive surgery.
You might have thought that the scar on his face in the movie came from the wampa attack, but that’s just not so. It’s what was used to explain it though, since Hamill was in a horrendous car crash that required him to have reconstructive facial surgery so that he could continue to play the part of Luke Skywalker. Apparently he was pretty messed up, enough so that he didn’t even look like himself. But the wampa attack allowed this new look to make sense considering that he got clubbed in the face with a claw the size of a mailbox. Thankfully he healed up eventually and was able to keep going
1. Carrie Fisher couldn’t wear underwear for the first movie.
George Lucas wouldn’t let her on the premise that in space underwear would constrict and cause harm to the wearer. I think we’d need to ask the astronauts about that one, but the real reason would seem to be that since she was wearing white, filmy robes that any underwear would be visible beneath it and would possibly ruin the effect. Thankfully in the next two movies she was given more clothing to wear so underwear was a possibility.
Oh yes, so dark.
