Considering the nature of the series, it is perhaps unsurprising that The Curse of Oak Island is continuing to hype up its supposed discoveries. This time, History is claiming that a discovery to be unveiled on the next episode could be the biggest discovery in the history of the treasure hunt on the titular island. Amusingly, this doesn’t actually sound that implausible, though that says a lot more about what has been found on Oak Island over the course of numerous expeditions over numerous decades than the significance of the supposed find.
For those who are curious, the discovery is something in the shape of a cross, which is being depicted as being connected in some manner to the crosses carved by imprisoned members of the Knights Templar in France. The problem is that even if there is indeed some sort of cross-shaped item turned up by the team, it would take a lot of evidence to establish a connection between it and the crosses carved by the members of the Knights Templar. After all, the simplicity of the cross means that it is one of the most common signs to have been used by humans. For proof, look no further than the fact that there were people carving crosses into cave walls during the Stone Age, which were not limited to the basic form of the cross but also extended to various variants on the basic form such as both the ankh and the swastika.
Likewise, the cross has seen use in everything from Sumerian cuneiform and Phoenician letters to Chinese characters, so it should come as no surprise to learn that the symbol can be found in places situated all around the world. As a result, while it is theoretically possible that the cross-shaped item is connected in some manner to the crosses carved out by members of the Knights Templar, The Curse of Oak Island had best be able to provide a lot of evidence if it wants that particular claim to be treated with seriousness.
What Does This Mean?
Some people might think that this is an uncharitable position. If so, they should remember that The Curse of Oak Island has a habit of hyping up its supposed discoveries beyond what the evidence can support. For that matter, the people responsible for its marketing have not been hesitant to use rather deceptive methods to convince interested individuals to continue watching. One recent example was how the trailer for the current season focused a fair amount on a chest that was examined by cast members of The Curse of Oak Island. The chest was indeed a chest that had belonged to a pirate. However, it was not something found on Oak Island but rather a seaman’s storage chest that had been kept in his family, which had nothing to do with the treasure hunt. Speaking bluntly, The Curse of Oak Island can’t be trusted when it comes to claims of interesting discoveries, which is why interested individuals might want to keep their expectations at a reasonable level until something genuinely interesting is produced by the series.
