Saturday’s Star Trek panel at San Diego Comic-Con brought out a lot of new information about Bryan Fuller’s upcoming CBS All-Access series Star Trek: Discovery (check out the first look at the USS-Discovery here), but one question that was on everyone’s mind was where the series would take place in Star Trek continuity.
While we don’t have all of the answers yet, Fuller’s big confirmation is that the series will be set in the “Prime” Timeline, which is the in-universe timeline of the previous television series but not that of JJ Abrams’ new film series (which is designated as the “Kelvin” Timeline). Fuller refrained from revealing exactly where on the timeline Discovery will be set (such as in relation to The Original Series), but fans are sure to be excited about the reveal that he did have at the panel.
In addition, Fuller revealed that, unlike most previous Star Trek series, Discovery will play out episode-by-episode in a serialized format similar to a novel, rather than in a standalone format for which the franchise is often known. Considering Bryan Fuller’s previous body of serialized work (such as Hannibal), I have a feeling that this will work out for the better.

A completely misleading headline. He did NOT reveal the time line. I mean seriously how desperate for readers are you that you have to lie? The question every one has, is it PRE-TOS or Between TOS and TNG?
The Spacecraft appears to have similarities between ENTERPRISE (the TV series)and KLINGON designs. Which makes no sense.
So what is the big secret? Everyone acts like this is The Manhattan Project. It’s a MOVIE so why the secrecy?
He revealed which of the two timelines that the series takes place in (the “Prime” timeline of the previous series and pre-Abrams films instead of the post-Abrams “Kelvin” timeline). He didn’t reveal exactly where on that timeline it’ll be, though.
The ship design is largely based on the unused Phase II design from the never-made sequel series to TOS.
STD is a TV series that will be airing on CBS All-Access, not a film. As for the secrecy, it’s probably just because they want to slowly make reveals until the January premiere so that they can continue building hype and keeping interest instead of dropping everything all at once. There’s so much sci-fi television to compete with these days that I can’t blame them for that.
