If you’re not familiar with the work of Hayao Miyazaki then you should be. He’s one of the finest animated film directors of all-time. One of the themes that tends to recur in all of his movies is flight. The folks at Fandor decided to dive into this a bit further by creating a tribute film to Miyazaki.
Beautifully edited together, the iconic scenes gave me goosebumps as I saw Totoro, Kiki, Porco, and the rest take to the sky. Intercut are scenes of Miyazaki speaking of Jiro Horikoshi, the aircraft engineer the film, The Wind Rises is based on, contemplating how a man who made warplanes was antiwar. It’s a fantastic short video essay, and I think anyone will appreciate it. (via Geektyrant)
If you haven’t seen any of Miyazaki’s work we sincerely hope this encourages you to go out and take a look at some of his movies. For those of you who don’t know, Miyazaki has recently come out of retirement to do one last feature. Japanese press has speculated that the new film could be a feature-length version of his CGI animated short Boro the Catepillar. Though we don’t have more information than that. We’ll keep you posted.
