There seems to be an irritating trend going around that has to do with celebrities buying up professional sports teams, or at least investing in them. There’s a good chance that Beyonce will at least invest in the Houston Rockets, but there’s nothing written in stone as of yet. How much control she has really depends on how much she invests, since the team is valued at around $2 billion at this point. Beyonce’s net worth isn’t even half that, but she could easily invest in the team and generate enough interest that she might actually have a say in what goes on with the Rockets.
As far as owning it goes there’s not a lot of desire by the fans to see the team change ownership at the moment, particularly not to someone that might know little to nothing about the role. In short, the owner is the head person of the organization. They oversee everything from the grandest to the tiniest detail of their team. They are responsible for everything that happens with the team and are expected to take the blame for anything that is going on in their organization.
Granted, they are expected to hire several high-level individual that are capable of making decisions and guiding the team in the direction it needs to go, but those individuals are still held accountable to the owner. It is an arduous, demanding job that requires almost total concentration and allows for very little free time as the owner must be on top of their team at all times.
At this point Beyonce knows about responsibility and she knows how to delegate, but she is still dependent on a lot of people in her life when it comes to getting things done and making sure that her life is on track. Owners of sports teams tend to need to be the person telling people what to do, not the other way around. They are advised to surround themselves with people that have experience and can keep them on the straight and narrow of course but their word is supposed to be law when it comes to the team.
Maybe Beyonce can do this, but the idea of her buying the Houston Rockets at this point still seems a little far-fetched. They’re a decent team, have better than average players, and are capable of winning championships if they pull together, but the sheer dynamic of becoming an owner without any past experience is something that seems beyond Beyonce’s current capabilities. If she were to purchase the Rockets it would be a trial by fire that would see her making a great deal of mistakes to start with and possibly leaning heavily on her executive staff for the first year if she made it that far.
There’s nothing saying that she can’t do it to be honest, but there’s also nothing saying that she can. Houston fans are no doubt divided on this issue if they care at all, and will be waiting with baited breath to see what happens.
