I love hearing these acoustical Star Wars-themed cover songs. Each one is done in such a way that you can’t help but be impressed at the skill of composer but this sounds like something that could have been used in an alternate version of the movie if such a thing existed. It almost makes me a bit jealous that I never learned how to play an instrument since the sound is incredible and awesome when you think about how much effort is going into the piece while watching his fingers move. It’s second nature to those that learn to play and are exceptionally good at it, but to those of us that don’t play at all it’s just amazing to watch.
The musical talent of those that are able to take a piece of music that already exists and expand upon it is impressive. To think that Star Wars was initially thought to be anything but a success before it’s many edits is hard to fathom but then if you look at it’s earliest forms you can understand why. This kind of music hadn’t been put into the film yet and the overall run-through looked absolutely horrible. Star Wars, if left alone and never touched, would have been another B-movie most likely and the world would have lost out on the genius of George Lucas and the franchise that was to follow. They also might have lost out on the original film score that was composed by John Williams. If that had happened then I honestly don’t know what hundreds of musicians would be trying to reproduce now.
On top of being so expertly played by so many the music is also highly distinctive, as in playing it anywhere would put thoughts of Star Wars and nothing else in a person’s head, unless of course they’d never watched the movies. I know, there are actually people that have never seen a single film and that’s okay. I’ll admit that Star Wars isn’t for everyone since the movies do tend to leave a lot of holes and there are some continuity issues throughout the trilogies thus far that a lot of fans have managed to pick apart time and again. And then there’s the whole snafu with the EU and how Disney swooped in like a hawkbat and tore apart the link between the EU and Star Wars and created its own canon that it determined would be what happened. Ah but as a consolation prize fans got to hear that the EU would be treated as a Legends aspect of the popular franchise. Thanks Disney.
Thankfully the music is one of the few things that has stayed the same the entire time. There have been new songs added, some that have been remastered, but still the original ones have never faded away or been replaced. Those that worked with John Williams on this project back then and those that are in control of it now at least recognize that the music is something uniquely important to the franchise and hopefully won’t dare mess with it in the years to come.
