Anxiety is disruptive to your life. Can I get a giant DUH sticker to plaster over this one? The video below goes into what really causes anxiety or makes it worse and it’s spot on when it comes to the physical reason why anxiety can and does happen to individuals, but glosses over such things as environment. Anxiety is something that is hard to get over and can’t just be willed away unless a person is exceptionally strong-willed and can somehow push themselves to the point that they will actually force their way past the anxiety in their lives. Of course that’s usually not the best course since it invites a great deal more stress and can wear a person down that much quicker.
The cause of anxiety can differ from person to person. In terms of environment anxiety can be caused by a hostile, unfriendly, or even just overly stressful environment in which a person doesn’t feel safe or secure. Or it could be caused by stressors that don’t ever seem to go away and continue to build up, making an individual feel trapped and isolated from others that could possibly help them. The point is that anxiety tends to build when we as individuals seem to have little to no control over the sphere of influence that we are capable of altering in one way or another.
I won’t say it’s easy to stop worrying about things we can’t control. It’s not to be honest, though many of us do it on a daily basis and tend to make our anxiety even worse. But when a person cannot find a way to control that which is within their own sphere of influence it can lead to a type of breakdown that is fairly common but can still cause major problems with a person’s mental and physical health.
Feeling anxious is unfortunately a very natural response. It comes from the primal fear response that humans have that keeps us safe and away from harm. Unfortunately what happens in those that have increased anxiety is that those fears tend to take over and become a central part of a person’s life in a way that is detrimental to their everyday function. Being afraid is not the worst thing in the world, it can allow a person to remain alert when out in the world and keep them attuned to anything that might cause them harm. However those that allow this fear or cannot control this fear from consuming their every waking moment tend to suffer from severe anxiety that can come in the form of panic attacks or develop into lifelong phobias that can be even worse.
There are medications of course that can help to tamp down such anxiety but they are usually prescribed after the patient has tried other methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Therapy is usually the first go-to for any doctor since it is much less inclined to produce the type of side effects that medication might.
Anxiety is indeed disruptive, but it is also capable of being managed.
