I’m not sure you’d see an American or any other top executive or CEO doing this in any other country, but there’s always a chance I guess. It didn’t seem to give Jack Ma, Asia’s richest man and CEO of Alibaba any difficulties though. The biggest thing about it was that he was dressed like the king of pop and no one even knew who he was until he took his mask off in front of 40,000 employees and revealed that he does have a very fun and eccentric side to him.
How many bosses would do this do you think? I know none of mine would have ever dared, not even on Halloween. But maybe it shows that Jack Ma is really all heart when it comes down to it, or that he loves the attention. Either way he’s a public figure that doesn’t mind getting up in front of his people and letting loose. Dressing up like Michael Jackson is the first step obviously, but striking all those poses is something else. It doesn’t matter if you’re the richest man in Asia or in the world, sometimes standing in front of a large group of people can be really intimidating.
But Jack Ma doesn’t even flinch. He continues the set and even motions for the others to get into it as well. Their rhythm isn’t really that great, but I get the feeling he didn’t put a lot into the choreography so it’s just a matter of making sure everyone is moving about when they’re supposed to be. It’s a good effort though and it comes off as something a little more heartfelt and respectful than you might expect. I do think if I saw my boss up on a stage like this I might laugh uproariously, but there would still be a lot of respect for getting up there and doing something like this.
My first real impression though, and there’s nothing but humor here, is that he looked like a power ranger when he first showed up. Seriously, he looked like another addition to the power rangers, and you know they’ve already got an impressive lineup. Maybe he could be the solid gold ranger and finance the ranger corps in some small way. I don’t know, I thought it was amusing at least.
Alibaba must be quite the company if Jack Ma can through a shindig like this, especially for all those people. When was the last time you saw a company this big in America throw this kind of party for its people? That’s the difference between a good company and a great company, how they take care of their employees. Jack Ma obviously respects the people that have made Alibaba such a well-renowned and successful company, and is willing to do a little something to show his appreciation. I’d love to see the Disney executives do something like just to show that they’re as good as people want to believe they are. It’d be eye opening to say the least.
