Poppy Doesn’t Know She’s Supposed To Have Two Eyes

This is Poppy. She is probably about a year and four months old now and she doesn’t know that she is different. Unfortunately, I am only her mom and I will never be able to have the title of “rescuer” for her but I will tell you what I know.

Poppy was found in a horse barn last year with a handful of her siblings. None of the kittens were in decent shape and their mother had abandoned them because she was sick and couldn’t care for them. The lovely people who found these kittens couldn’t care for them all and decided to bring home the two in the worst condition. One female and one male. Sadly, the male passed away while getting veterinary car. But the female was deemed saveable and had a long journey ahead of her. That was Poppy.

Poppy had a ruptured cornea, upper respiratory infection, fleas, ticks, ringworm, FIV, her ears had been chewed on by something, the end of her tail had been chewed off by something else and her entire body was stained yellow due to the urine and waste she lived in. I’m absolutely sure I missed something…

Her eye had to be removed and all other ailments were treated. She was put on a special diet to help her gain weight and become interested in processed food as well as to help boost her immune system. It’s around this time that I was fortunate enough to work at the specialty pet supplies store that her rescuers shopped at. They asked if I knew anyone that wanted a scrappy, one-eyed cat with possible medical issues and I knew she had to be mine.

I’ve had Poppy for a little over a year now and the transformation she has gone through in that time is incredible. Her tail has healed and grown all its fur back, her stained, yellow fur now only exists as a memory, her ears are just perfect and her eye, or where it used to be, just makes it look like she’s winking at you.

I truly believe that she doesn’t remember living in that barn and being feasted on by every minor ailment possible. And if you met her today, I’m positive you wouldn’t be convinced that her road had any bumps in it. My quirky little kitten is the best of the best. I am proud to say that I am her mother and I am sure she doesn’t know that she’s supposed to have two eyes.
