Actors Whose Names you Should Know: John Carroll Lynch

If you don’t know anything about John Carroll Lynch then you might want to check what you’ve been watching because chances are you might have seen him and don’t remember. It’s hard to say that however since he’s a pretty big personality and he’s hard to miss. There aren’t a lot of instances when totally changes his appearance to the point that you can’t recognize him, but there are those moments when you have to wait for the credits or perhaps wait for him to appear with his makeup or costume to really understand how good he is at disappearing in plain sight when he wants to. His career has spanned for well over two decades and he’s played some of the scariest as well as some of the nicest characters you’d ever want to meet between his TV and movie roles. Sometimes he’s the extra you don’t really notice and other times he’s one of the most important actors in the production.

Here’s a few scenes that show how great he can be.

Fargo

Okay so he doesn’t do much here but it’s the whole idea that he’s a loving husband and doesn’t always know what his wife goes through, yet she supports him and is excited for him after her own day of dealing with people she’d rather not have to. This is the kind of marriage where one person seems clueless but the other person doesn’t mind so long as they both know that they’re fully invested in each other. He can play the family man quite well and has no trouble acclimating to the part when he needs to. He has that kind of face that can be loving and doting when it calls for it, the big teddy bear that you can tell is a big softie around his wife.

Mercury Rising

If anyone ever asks it is not easy to take care of an autistic person be they a kid or an adult. But kids seem to offer a unique challenge as they don’t yet have any life experience at all to fall back on and need continuity and a sense of order sometimes to really deal with the world around them. Cole is the kind of kid that really needs things to be the same as much as possible and tends to fall apart when they’re not. Autism is a very difficult thing to deal with if someone doesn’t know what they’re doing, which is why it is so important to be well-read and very patient with those that have this condition.

The Drew Carey Show

Steve is Drew’s older brother and was kind of a pain to most of the gang since he was known to pull pranks and kind of make Drew’s life miserable back when they were younger. But his inclusion into the show was something that made for great comic relief when he revealed that he liked to dress up as a woman, and then when he was attracted to Mimi. That was something that a lot of people didn’t see coming and still didn’t understand when it was decided that it would continue. But it did manage to get a lot of laughs so it was a positive thing that managed to spice up the show a little bit.

American Horror Story: Freak Show

AHS is where he got to go off the rails and be especially scary since Twisty was a certified nightmare. His back story was pretty tragic but at the same time the decision to go around murdering people dressed up as a dirty, vagrant clown was something that couldn’t really be understood at first. The fact that Twisty was such a big part of the show and yet never managed to join Elsa’s bunch was kind of odd, but something seems to indicate that he wouldn’t really fit in since he was more interested in mayhem than mugging for the crowd. Plus the look of his mouthpiece might have unnerved most anyone, even the freaks.

For a show like this you could only imagine that they were bound to get some of the worst killers they could find from history to emulate. John Wayne Gacy was of course one of the worst that history could produce, and the fact that Lynch played him in such a playful way only made it even more creepy. But that’s how good this guy is, even when he’s supposed to be creepy he’s somehow personable to the point that you wouldn’t mind sitting and talking with him, at least until that murderous gleam came to his eye.

Seriously, check the films and TV shows you’ve watched and you might find him in at least one or two of them, he’s been around a bit. And he’s been great in just about everything he’s done.
