A Blast from the Past: The First ‘Captain Marvel’ Trailer Takes Us Back to the ‘Blockbuster Video’-Filled 90’s

The Marvel Cinematic Universe of 2018 may still be reeling from the genocidal snap of Thanos’ finger that was heard clear across the universe this summer, but that doesn’t mean that the House that Iron Man built has any plans of slowing down in the lead-up until the as-of-yet unnamed Avengers 4 next May.  A few short months after the Mad Titan’s conquest gave us the follow-up to 2015’s Ant-Man, now with 100% more Wasp in the supporting cast, and Netflix has churned out second seasons for both Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

But those were thing we’d already seen before in some form of another.  The ineffectual Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) was just a side-story about what some of the Marvel fandom’s least favorite Avengers were up to when the big guns were scattered across the galaxy fighting Thanos and his children.  Everybody already loved Luke Cage.  Everybody already… I dunno… tolerated(?) Iron Fist.  Marvel was clearly just spinning its wheels until we got going with how the real heroes are inevitably going to undo Thanos’ triumph.

But this is different.  Sure, Captain Marvel is yet another prequel filled with familiar characters that won’t push the movie continuity forward while Disney revs up for Phase 3’s star-studded finale, but we’re not talking about something we’ve already seen before.  Not really.

Yes, Fury and Coulson will be there.  Yes, a couple of the bit players from Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) will be there too (specifically Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer).  But this is the first time we’re going to see the movie’s headliner, Carol Danvers, who was called into action in Nick Fury’s final moments in an Avengers: Infinity War (2018) post-credit scene.  Marvel might not be moving things forward with Captain Marvel, but they are certainly fleshing them out.

I find damn near everything that this trailer hints at to be an endlessly fascinating prospect.  From delving even more deeply into Nick Fury’s background to finally getting another big screen appearance from fan favorite Agent Coulson, from stepping back into the 90’s of my childhood to scrambling my brain to figure out exactly who among Infinity War‘s surviving cast is or is not a Skrull, it’s all fist-poundingly exciting in a way that franchises like the MCU simply shouldn’t be a decade on in their lifespan.
Maybe that’s the most exciting thing about this movie.  The fact that it IS so exciting despite how many Marvel movies we’ve had since 2008.  And, for the record, Captain Marvel makes 21 (and don’t even get me started on all the TV series and one-shots).

Oh, and did I mention that Brie Larson cold-cocked a smiling old woman on a bus?  Yeah, you can tell that this movie’s going to be awesome.
