After watching Grey’s Anatomy for 12 seasons, I often tend to wonder why anyone would ever want to get a job at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Sure, the place is full of hot doctors and the pay would be awesome, but its appears the death toll is much higher if you are a surgeon. Over the years we have witnessed the tearful passings of George, Lexie and McSteamy. Just when you thought Shonda Rhimes was done killing off your favorite characters, she went ahead and offed Derek Shepherd. The one person who has cheated death more than any other character is our favorite leading lady Meredith Grey. Take a walk down memory lane and read about four times that Dr. Grey cheated death and survived. Based on the previews for the series, which returns February 11th at 8 PM, it appears Meredith may cheat death yet again!
1. Bomb Explosion in “As We Know It,” 2006
38 million people tuned in to watch the Grey’s Anatomy episode that aired after the Super Bowl. This is the concluding episode that aired the following week. Meredith switched places with the paramedic and now is holding a bomb inside a patient’s body. Once the bomb is removed, there is a very high chance that Meredith will perish. As she hands it off to the bomb squad, she watches as it explodes and kills them. The explosion causes Meredith to fly across the hallway and end up in a state of shock.
2. Drowning in “Drowning on Dry Land,” 2007
During a fairy boat accident, the doctors must report to the area and attend to the victims. While Meredith is trying to help one, she is pushed off the dock. Instead of trying to swim, it appears that Meredith has given up. Luckily, Derek finds her and tries to bring her back to life. Before Meredith is resuscitated, she receives a visit from Denny and also the bomb squad leader who perished during the bomb explosion.
3. Shooter in the Hospital in “Death and All His Friends,” 2010
This will always be my favorite episode of Grey’s Anatomy. I still remember watching every scene on the edge of my seat as the shooter moved from floor to floor of the hospital trying to find his next victim. Though Meredith was uninjured during this time, she still came close as she witnessed Derek getting shot by Mr. Clark. During the events, Meredith does suffer a miscarriage while trying to save Owen’s life.
4. Plane Crash in “Flight,” 2012
I find it interesting that the hospital would need 6 of their top surgeons boarding a plane at one time, but Seattle Grace thought it was a good idea. That is until the plane crashed and left everyone fighting for their lives. Sadly, Lexie and Mark would not survive. Meredith was left unscathed from the crash, but the event did affect her emotionally. Aside from losing her sister, Meredith developed PTSD and was not able to board an airplane for quite some time.
Which one of Meredith’s brushes with death did you think was the most tragic? Let us know in the comments section below.
