Glee did a brave thing in last night’s episode. It was controversial and polemic and a lot of people were offended by it from what I have read around the internet. However, I have to say it worked. They treated a delicate subject very well and with a very, very funny approach.
‘Blame it on the alcohol’discussed the problem with underage drinking. It all started because Rachel wanted inspiration to write a song for Regionals and decides to throw a party so she can ‘live a little’. That fact served as foundation for all the other subplots of the episode. Blaine and Rachel kissed, which caused her to develop a massive crush on him and for him to question if he really is gay. And it made Kurt insanely jealous.
After the party, Kurt drove a very drunk Blaine home and let him crash in his bed. The next morning, Kurt’s dad thinks that his son is behaving inappropriately, which causes a tiff between them. Rachel asks Blaine out and Kurt gets angry when his friend says yes and that he wants to experiment.
Meanwhile, Mr. Schue is depressed because his life sucks and Coach Beiste takes him out to drink. He gets insanely drunk and tries to drunk dial Emma. Only he accidentally calls Sue and that served as one of the funniest scenes yet on Glee, because Sue plays his drunken message for the entire school to hear.
Throughout that Principal Figgins asked the Glee Club to perform at school for the Alcohol Awareness Week, which led to a crazy good performance by Brittany that ended in a hilarious way. I have to say, I don’t think I had ever laughed so hard watching Glee before. For an entire hour, I was thoroughly entertained. That party scene alone had me in tears from laughing so much.
Now, I know people have been saying that they are encouraging underage drinking with this episode. But they seem to be forgetting how it ended. The message was that underage drinking is bad, but it happens. What you can do is try to be responsible. What Mr. Schue did at the end of the episode was actually really nice and I have heard of people who actually offer that service. If you’ve had too much to drink, call this number and they’ll come pick you up and drive you home. It’s the best you can do because forbidding it will only make them try harder to break the rules.
I know some of you may disagree and probably hated the episode (and this review). But I actually really enjoyed it and my faith in the show has been restored after last week’s disastrous Justin Bieber episode.
Other things that absolutely need to be mentioned:
- Rachel writing a song about her headband. Hilarious.
- ‘It tastes like pink! Pink!’— Rachel
- ‘Your face tastes awesome’— Rachel, after kissing Blaine during a Spin the Bottle game.
- ‘Now performing the hit single Tik and also Tok by rapper Ke dollar sign Ha, the New Directions’— Principal Figgins
- ‘Drink responsibly’— Brittany, after throwing up on stage.
- ‘That is so racist!’— Brittany in response to Quinn’s comment about the pot calling the kettle black.
- ‘Are you kidding me? I just had a relationship with a guy who turned out to be gay. That is song writing gold!’— Rachel, after Blaine confirmed he is 100% gay.
B+, Glee. Keep up the good work.
