As a seasoned reality TV enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic show Flavor of Love. This dating show, which aired for four seasons, featured groups of female contestants vying for the affection of hip-hop’s most well-known hype man, Flavor Flav. Among those who left a lasting impression is Shay Johnson, aka ‘Buckeey.’ Shay appeared on the second season of the show and later in the spin-off, Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School. Although her initial fame was short-lived, she resurfaced as a cast member of Love and Hip Hop. If you missed out on getting to know her back then, now’s your chance. Here are 10 things you didn’t know about Shay Johnson.
1. A Near-Death Experience in a 2019 Car Accident
In the fall of 2019, Shay Johnson faced a harrowing car accident that almost claimed her life. Rushed to the hospital for her injuries, both her car and the other driver’s vehicle were totaled. She sustained multiple bruises, a concussion, and an arm sprain. Although the specifics of the accident remain undisclosed, Johnson expressed her gratitude on social media for escaping without severe injuries.
2. A Close Bond with Her Two Brothers
Shay Johnson has two brothers, Joe and Emjay. Emjay has recently been in the spotlight due to his relationship with Shay’s LHH co-star, Amera La Negra. Joe, a former athlete with a PhD, now works as a performance coach and public speaker. Contrary to what viewers might assume, Shay is close to both of her brothers, and they often collaborate on speaking engagements and appearances.
3. A Fitness Journey Sparked by Heartbreak
A painful breakup can either make or break a person. In Shay Johnson’s case, it was a catalyst for change. After experiencing heartbreak, she decided to focus on health and fitness. Not only did Johnson shed some weight, but she also began helping others. Her efforts eventually led to the creation of Shay J Fit, a website where she shares tips on healthy eating and fitness.
4. Music Video Appearances
Reality TV isn’t Shay Johnson’s only claim to fame. She began appearing in music videos around the same time she debuted on Flavor of Love. In 2006, she featured in the video for Bubba Sparxxx’s hit song “Ms. New Booty” and made a cameo in Fabolous’ 2007 video for “Baby Don’t Go”.
5. A Turbulent Relationship with Lil Scrappy
The breakup that led Shay Johnson to embrace health and wellness was with none other than Lil Scrappy. Some may remember Scrappy from his hit singles “No Problems” and “Neva Eva,” both released in 2004. However, younger audiences likely know him best from his appearance on the Love and Hip Hop franchise. Scrappy and Shay’s relationship, which lasted about a year, was heavily documented on LHH, where Shay accused Scrappy of being a liar and a cheater.
6. Battling Fibroids
Sadly, Shay Johnson is no stranger to health issues. In 2019, she opened up about her struggle with fibroids and revealed that a grapefruit-sized fibroid had been found in her uterus. The fibroid caused severe complications, resulting in Shay needing a blood transfusion. Since learning about her fibroids, Shay has worked to raise awareness about this issue.
7. Atlanta Roots
Although Shay was most recently a cast member on Love and Hip Hop: Miami, she is actually from Atlanta. Born and raised in The A, she was part of the LHH Atlanta cast before deciding to move to The Sunshine State.
8. Aspiring Actress
Like many other reality stars, Shay also dreams of becoming an actress. While she hasn’t landed any major roles yet, she has gained some experience. Shay secured a significant role in the 2016 film, Losing Everything.
9. Magazine Cover Model
In addition to her other accomplishments, Johnson has some modeling experience under her belt. She has graced the covers of several high-profile magazines, including Black Men’s Magazine and King.
10. A True Entrepreneur
Say what you want about Shay Johnson, but her work ethic and determination are undeniable. Not only did she turn her passion for fitness into a business, but she also launched another venture called The Healthy Hand, where she sells products for stomach and thyroid pain relief.
