Stuff like this makes a person wonder if Paul Reubens is really hurting for money and fame or if he just has that much free time and is comfortable where he’s at in his career. Hopefully it’s the latter and not the former since despite what anyone thinks of him this is the guy that perfected the whole Pee Wee Herman act and is the only one that could possibly make it work. But giving a shout out to someone from Paul Reubens would require that the individual actually be a fan of Reubens since without this prerequisite someone might think you’re pulling a gag on them. Add to that the fact that he won’t be making the shout out in his usual Pee Wee Herman garb and it might be kind of confusing for those that didn’t really get into the whole Pee Wee vibe back in the day. If people are going to be sincere about this, Pee Wee wasn’t for everyone since he was kind of zany and did tend to get a little nuts now and again even for the host of a kids’ show. He wasn’t a new and hip Mr. Rogers by any means since he had his own style and his own look, but he did have something that a lot of people locked on since he did become rather popular when a lot of us were still kids.
Plus, there was something about Pee Wee that wasn’t entirely childish but was more than enough so to appeal to some folks since he was nutty and kind of out there in a big way but he could dial it down now and again to get a point across. You might be wondering when and if that happened, which is fair since among the hilarity of the show and the movies it was hard to figure out just when and where he came across an honest and sincerely serious scene. But it did happen now and again, a person just had to notice it since getting into the craziness of the whole thing was a little too easy. At this point however Reubens is in his late 60s if you can believe that and aside from more wrinkles he doesn’t look much different than he did way back in the day. He’s done a few other projects since Pee Wee obviously, as he did show up in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the first movie, and then went on to take several other notable roles. He’s been the Penguin’s father in both Batman Returns and the Gotham TV series, and if you’ll remember he did show up in the original Blues Brothers movie as one of the waiters in the fine dining establishment where Jake and Elwood were seeking to obtain another band member. So Reubens has had a long and very notable career, though watching him perform shout outs does make a person wonder if he’s being altruistic or just needs the extra money. Again, I’d rather see the first as the likely possibility since it seems the more positive angle to go by, but it’s usually wise to at least try and see both sides. Of course when you think about it checking out his net worth is a good idea, and given that his net worth is around $5 million, not huge but nothing to sneeze at, it does seem as though he’s doing some good with his fame.
One thing that Paul never seems to get away from however is the time he was arrested for inappropriate behavior, putting it nicely, in an adult theater. Thankfully that time is well behind him but it’s always there ready to be brought up again. It’s also thankful that since then he’s managed to retain his image and that of Pee Wee Herman after the noise died down. He did make a mistake without question and he did retreat from the public eye for a while, but thankfully he came back and continued the work that had made him famous and a lot of people happy. One very important thing about actors, among the many, is that they do have lives outside of their roles, and this is something that people seem to forget now and again as they expect these people to act in the same way as their on screen persona at all times. Like it or not, they are grown adults that have the ability to do and say what they want. It’s not always wise, but it is the right of every person to live the way they want to live. That being said Reubens made up for his indiscretion in a big way and has been seen by the fickle fans as someone that atoned for what he did. Personally I think he made a mistake a long time ago and learned from it. As of now he’s still a legend in show business, and for a fan getting a shout out from him might be something special.
