Marvel series don’t seem to be doing all that well when it comes to staying on the air, have you noticed? The Punisher, Daredevil, The Defenders, Iron Fist….well we can kind of understand that one. But apart from the bad outing of the supposed ‘white savior’ that was Iron Fist it would seem that Marvel just hasn’t cracked the code yet when it comes to keeping their shows on the air. That’s kind of odd since in the movies they’ve been nothing less than great, but as Lesley Goldberg of The Hollywood Reporter revealed the show has been losing in the ratings since it popped up a couple of seasons ago and it’s been deduced that it’s time to move on. The downside of this is that there’s really no idea just when or if we’ll see these two heroes again since the TV shows have been kind of a death knell for the chance at seeing said characters pop up in the future, but there’s always some hope at least.
Cloak and Dagger are a pair that have been present in the comics since the early 80s, so they’re not a team that’s been around for nearly as long as some heroes but they’ve been around long enough that they’re a memorable part of the Marvel universe. They’ve been associated with a number of teams and have had dealings with many heroes throughout their history, and even better is that in the original Infinity Gauntlet Cloak did play a brief role after Dagger had been snapped into non-existence. In fact he was one of the few that almost had a chance to contain Thanos, if not for the gauntlet that gave the mad titan a chance to escape and atomize the hero. People want to talk about diversity and unity in comics, these two have been doing it for a while now and don’t seem to get the kind of attention that comes to mind when other, more notable heroes practice diversity. As a TV show it would appear that the idea didn’t work too well, but maybe we’ll see them in the movies next since as I did mention the duo have had their dealings with other heroes in the past and it would great to see them pop up in ways that might allow them a better chance at interacting with the Marvel universe.
It’s funny how Cloak barely ever gets mentioned when we talk about black heroes in the comics, and Dagger isn’t mentioned when it comes to women. That kind of blows the debates about sexism and race right out of the water, at least briefly, since these two have been working together for a while and are actually quite effective when you take a look at them. Dagger and Cloak are so opposite that it seems as though it shouldn’t work in the least, but overall they’ve been one of the best duo’s in the Marvel universe for quite some time. As power goes they’re both impressive but not so physically strong as to be on par with a lot of heroes, but their abilities are insanely impressive since Cloak tends to subsist on living beings that are drawn into his darkness, even though he can be sustained for a while by Dagger’s ability to produce light. Both are apparently mutants as their latent abilities were awakened by the use of an experimental drug that ‘woke up’ said abilities and cause them to manifest. For this reason alone it’s enough to think that we might be able to see them in a future X-Men movie if the powers that be are going to be kind enough. They’ve worked with the X-Men as well as The New Mutants in the past, which could mean that there’s a chance that we might see their influence at some point if the people in charge are going to play it smart. After all this duo was given a shot on TV, where Marvel has been notoriously up and down, so maybe it’s time to give them a shot on the big screen and see what comes of it.
It’s amazing in a way to see how DC has been killing it on the small screen and is even now starting to find their footing on the big screen but Marvel is struggling on the small screen but absolutely smashing it on the big screen. The merchandising is anyone’s game it would seem since people are going to gravitate towards whatever they happen to like, which in some cases might be both DC and Marvel at the same time, but when it comes to some of their underrepresented heroes Marvel really needs to kick it into gear since those are the people that are going to support the franchise once the bigger stars start dropping off. James Whitbrook of Gizmodo has more to say about this.
