“Riverdale” is an American drama series rotating around the lives of four teens; Archie Andrews and his friends. It expresses the darkness, weirdness, and surreal experiences in the Town of Riverdale. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa created the show and produced it through Warner Bros. He is a Nicaraguan-American screenwriter, playwright, and comic book writer. He is the creator of Archie Comics and is also known for television series “Big Love, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” and “Glee.” Netflix’s “Riverdale” premiered on January 26, 2017, and season four premiered on October 9, 2019. This date falls in line with seasons two and three that debuted on October 11 in 2017 and October 10, 2018, respectively. Season four aims to address the strange disappearance of Jughead, which happened at the end of season three when we see Archie, Betty, and veronica burn Jugheads bloody clothes. Let’s check out how “Riverdale” season 4 is different from the previous seasons.
1. Going deeper into the relationships of the main actors
According to Seventeen, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that the series would further explore the connections among the main actors. Since season one, the series has always left the fans wanting more exploration, depth, and growth of their favorite characters. From the first season, only Betty Cooper has been explored satisfactorily in the view of some viewers. In season 4, the series looks to explore Veronica, Jughead, and Archie further. The show will also expose more profound things concerning their personalities and love life to let the fans in on what exactly happens or happened in the characters’ lives. The fourth season of the show threatens to be more exciting compared to the previous seasons.
2. Musical episode
The director confirmed that there would be musical episodes in the fourth season. The fans had missed a chapter where their favorite actors would burst out into songs. In the past, they had done musical episodes in two with Carrie: The musical and Heathers: The Musical. Usually, we are used to seeing the cast sing, such as in Season 3, Episode 16, when they are all on stage. However, Roberto further said that the cast would this time come to life as they will all compete in a battle of the bands. The episode will see the characters sing different songs reflecting the episode’s plot as well as the flow of the show. For the music fans, Josie McCoy will feature in the episode; therefore, at least one of the eleven songs lined up for “The Musical” will be his.
3. Betty will work alongside her brother
Wyatt Nash plays Betty’s long lost half brother Charles Smith, who is back in Town. Charles is the son of F.P. Jones and Alice Cooper. He is of sound mind, and he worked undercover together with his mother, to attempt to bring down Edgar. The FBI agent will team up with his half-sister to save their mother, Alice Cooper. Alice had worked undercover on the farm for a while now. She got kidnapped by the cult when everyone on the farm except Kevin disappeared at the end of season three. Surprisingly, Betty has never had a proper relationship with all her family members. She never got along with her father, who is a serial killer. She relates well with her mother though their relationship has always been shaky. Wyatt will be playing as a recurring character in season 4. He recently took to his Instagram in May to confirm to the viewers his appearance, posting a photo of himself on set saying, “Guess who’s coming to Riverdale.” In the third episode, the duo will manage to track down the cult in a “Great Redemption for Alice.”
4. Halloween episode, finally
According to The Wrap, during a panel for the show at San Diego Comic-Con, the team revealed that they are doing a Halloween episode. For the first time, the show will be celebrating the famous holiday on screen. The cast will represent different ideas, as explained by the director. Furthermore, they are still seeking permission to have some of the cast members dressed as superheroes. Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty Cooper, noted that the fourth season would have both fun and sad moments. She asserted that there would be a Halloween episode, but she was sure that someone would die in it, leaving us with a bit of intriguing mystery. For a long time, “Riverdale” and the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” have been part of the same universe made by the same team. The chances of a crossover in the two shows have always been dim, and Roberto ruled out any possibility of a crossover. Given the existence of magic in Sabrina, the Halloween party offers a decent chance for a bridge between the two shows. When All Souls day arrives, dark magic will be allowed to spread into “Riverdale.”
5. Tribute to a fallen member
The show’s showrunner confirmed that there would be a tribute to their late cast, Luke Perry. Luke played the role of Fred Andrews as a co-star since season one. Its director tweeted that the premiere episode of season four would be the most crucial. He went on to share the title of the episode, “In Memoriam,” saying the cast is very thankful to have the chance to honor both Fred and Luke. Luke’s final appearance on the show was last season. He died of a stroke in March 2019 while shooting season 3 at the age of 52 years. In as much as there seems to be a plan in place, Luke’s death came with a big blow to the arrangements for season four. According to Hollywood life, Roberto said at a San Diego press room that they thought of the idea way back in season three. They were, however, nervous and wanted to ensure that everything was right before they made a move. They wanted it to be extraordinary, saying it is emotional, and the fans will surely feel like it’s a different kind of a “Riverdale” episode. Shannen Doherty, who co-starred with Luke in “Beverly Hills,” will be a guest star in the episode to play a unique role in honor of Luke since they were real-life friends.
