Beverly Hills Cop 4 Will Be Eddie Murphy’s Next Movie

In a way it makes sense to think that Beverly Hills Cop 4 would be Eddie Murphy’s next move since it would serve as the bookend as Jeremy Dick from MovieWeb has revealed Murphy has stated. At this point though some aging stars seem to think that it’s a good idea to revisit old ideas that, for all intents and purposes, were wrapped up and put away for future generations to enjoy or for those of us that remember seeing them the first time to dig up from time to time. If you haven’t heard about it yet Murphy is going to be starring in Coming 2 America as well in the sequel that will see him return as Prince Akeem, who will make his way back to America to seek out his son. The ideas are enough to make one shake their head as they wonder why we keep revisiting old movies that are great in a way but had a seeming conclusion that worked for a lot of people. For Murphy though it almost sounds as though stand-up might be the final frontier for his career, and that he’s considering simply closing out his movies with a funny note before moving back to the stag where he was absolute comic gold.

If you’ve never seen his comedy routine then you might want to go and take a look, since movies such as Delirious and Raw were without a doubt among his best works since it’s simply Eddie Murphy on stage telling jokes that, if you have a sense of humor, will leave you in stitches since his level of humor is one that’s kind of infectious. For regular cinema though he’s had to tone it down throughout the years it would seem, especially when he made his way into family films that didn’t allow for as much swearing or material that people would find overtly offensive. If you’re thinking that the Nutty Professor movies were family films however your sense of humor might be just fine considering that the raunchy nature and over the top jokes and gags were something that might not be seen as all that cute today. But what am I saying? Humor is something that is entirely subjective since what offends one person will make another person burst out in laughter considering that people tend to look at things very differently and can usually be convinced that something is uproariously funny if they only look at it from another point of view.

It does seem as though the Beverly Hills Cop story might need a cap to put it in better perspective since Axel was still running wild and free by the end of the third one when he took down a counterfeiting ring that was being run out of a theme park. That almost seemed like it was a movie that shouldn’t have been made, but was anyway since Murphy’s level of comedy is hard to beat and is usually so wild and out there that people are willing to contribute to it and try to make money off of it. But after so long things are going to have to change since Axel should have either retired by now or risen in the ranks to become someone of great importance or someone that can at least harangue his detectives much like Inspector Todd did for him early on in the story. If nothing else it might be great to see that Axel has made something of himself rather than staying at the level that so many people remember since it would definitely put a positive spin on the character and possibly give him a bit of closure that people could enjoy. Of course some people might want to see him remain as a detective and keep that low profile status that made him so popular in the first place, but in the interest of change it might be best to see him as the old dog that the other detectives either ridicule but can’t help respecting, or the guy that actually trains the new recruits and puts them through their paces. It wouldn’t do to tame him completely, but without some sort of change it does seem as though the character might come off as kind of stale. Rhian Daley of NME has speculated on the movie as well, quoting Murphy’s initial refusal to make the movie.

One has to wonder if this is going to be a trend that more and more stars start to follow when it comes to capping off their careers as they get older. Eddie Murphy is only in his late fifties so he’s not really ancient as of yet, but he’s definitely far enough from his twenties and thirties to consider slowing down just a bit. Bringing back his old movies, a couple of them at least, might seem like it’s a bid to stay relevant, but it could be that he simply wants to give them the ending he thought they deserved.
