If there’s anyone that’s played Batman that might be able to give some valuable advice it might be either Michael Keaton or Christian Bale. While the former was successful for at least one movie the latter made it to two before his character started seeming a little frayed around the edges. Still, he’s one of the two that could give Robert Pattinson a few tips that could prove invaluable down the line. Of course one, as Kevin Burwick of MovieWeb reveals, is the need to relieve himself on his own, as this should make Pattinson feel as though he’s earned the right to wear the suit. Strange and funny as that sounds, you should be able to understand it when you take into account just how hard that suit is to get into and out of. Every actor that’s played Batman can attest to that since from Adam West to Ben Affleck the batsuit has been something that’s extremely form-fitting and is kind of uncomfortable to sit in for prolonged periods of time. Think about it, especially as the suit has evolved over the years. For the earliest Batman in the 1940s, Lewis Wilson, the suit might have been slightly more comfortable since it didn’t cling as much and appeared to be much looser than any of the others. By the time West came around the suit had already been tightened up and the appearance had gone a bit goofy.
Dana Forsythe of SyFy has actually gone into great detail about this since the bat suit has changed in a big way throughout the years, from the comics to the live action renderings that have managed to appear just different enough to pass muster each time they’re introduced. When you look at the suit you get the idea that it was designed to stand out, but it was also designed to blend into the shadows, to intimidate, and to cause a criminal to feel a sudden stab of fear that they couldn’t control. That’s been Batman’s whole trick throughout the years, he’s the vigilante hero that doesn’t let people know he’s coming and strikes from the darkness more often than not. His appearance is meant to unnerve people, but throughout the years he’s also been able to back it up more often than not since he’s so insanely skilled and has a bevy of technological toys that he brings to the fight that can do just about anything it seems like. Plus there’s the fact that he is and always has been possessed of a genius intellect that makes him more than formidable, it makes him a hero without the added power that a lot of other do-gooders have.
This is what Robert Pattinson is stepping into, and while a lot of people, including Ramin Setoodeh of Variety tend to believe that he’s going to make the transition easily and without any real issue, there’s still enough doubt that remains since a lot of people thought Ben Affleck was going to make it work as well. A couple of movies later and Affleck is out and the next name on the list is up and being heaped with expectations and support that should hopefully get him over the hump and make it possible for him to crush this role and make it his own. Am I a bit doubtful? Maybe a little since Pattinson, for all the cred he carries with him, and it’s a lot really, is still best known by many as the glittering vampire from Twilight. That role has followed the actor for a long time now and whether he cares about such a thing or not it’s got to be hard to shed even when looking at becoming another in a growing line of legends that’s put on the cowl and prepared to take on the forces of evil. The thought seems to be that he’ll be the one to take the role and master it in the same way that Christian Bale did, and with Bale’s blessing no less it would seem that he’s being given the keys to the franchise and the go-ahead to make it work in his own way. That should be inspirational right? It should make us get up and puff out our chests as we await The Batman with baited breath and a sense of pride that Pattinson will bring greatness back to the role.
Keep in mind that’s how we felt about Val Kilmer, and George Clooney, and Ben Affleck. Remember what happened to all three of them? They flopped, hard. It’s a big hope that the same thing won’t happen to Pattinson, that he’ll be able to pull it out and make some magic happen. But so long as he remembers what Christian Bale told him, that being able to relieve himself by himself while in the suit would make him a true superhero. It seems like good advice.
