The word of the day when it comes to Sony and the act of taking back Spider-Man seems to be ‘disingenuous’ since quite honestly it seems as though they might be a tad jealous that the MCU has made the wallcrawler a big star when they were well on their way to sinking not one but two attempts at the franchise star as the Maguire and Garfield eras weren’t going anywhere it seems. The fact that Tom Holland was so big in the Marvel universe seems to have been a sore spot for Sony as they’re now thinking of about 5 to 6 new shows set in the same universe according to Thomas Bacon of ScreenRant. In a big way it seems as though Sony is trying to tell the MCU that anything they can do, Sony can do bigger and better. Whether that’s going to pan out or not remains to be seen since quite honestly Spider-Man’s story does branch off in a lot of directions, not the least of which would include Morbius the living vampire and Venom, who have already been set to appear as Venom will hopefully be bringing in Carnage with a second movie and will reportedly be incorporating Spider-Man as well.
There doesn’t seem to be any concrete details yet for the heroes or villains that might be brought in for the upcoming TV series that are being conceptualized, but at this point it does sound as though some more obscure figures from Spider-Man’s story might have been given the green light. If Sony was being smart though they might ask for permission to keep their own universe rooted within the MCU or at least parallel to it now that we know there’s a multiverse. That would at least give fans the idea that there might be a return to normalcy in the future, but one of these days it might be that Sony won’t have choice since Disney might very well attempt to take them over as well. Adam Barnhardt of ComicBook has more to say on this but if you’re thinking it could never happen just keep in mind that no one ever thought that Fox would cave to Disney either, and look what’s happened. Plus, even though Sony doesn’t have nearly as much to offer in terms of intellectual property, it would be a chance to nab the Spider-Man character back and with him a whole list of enemies and allies that could be fully incorporated into the MCU. Don’t count out the House of Mouse when it comes to getting what they want, as it’s already been rumored that they’re trying to convince Comcast to sell their interest in Hulu so that Disney can own it all.
Some might call this a big power play and some might call Sony’s insistence on running their house their way as an act of defiance against a much larger corporation that could easily snuff them out when it comes to entertainment. But as of now Sony is staying the course and is going to do things in the best way they know how. Considering that Spider-Man is a huge deal for them it stands to reason that they’re not willing to let him go just yet since it would mean following Fox into the Mouse House and trading uncertain success for almost certain restructuring. Sony is likely going to hold out as long as they can and try to capitalize on the success that Spider-Man has had thus far, but to be frank their track record with the wall-crawling superhero hasn’t been all that great as of late, and introducing more individuals from the main story might be the ticket to regaining the trust of the fans, or it might all be a bunch of smoke and mirrors as they try desperately to figure out how to top the MCU, if they can.
What might come out of Sony could be chalked up to a last-ditch effort to really pull out all the stops and make like they’ve been doing this for years, which they have in fact, but also to produce something that will dazzle and amaze people to the point that they’ll forget that Tom Holland was a rising star in the MCU for a while. That doesn’t seem entirely possible since he’s already been so well-established, but it might be time to give Sony a chance and see what they’ll do, since at this point the possibility of seeing Spider-Man back with Marvel is going to be kind of slim unless a deal can be struck or Sony comes to their senses and admits that the MCU did something great with the character and should be allowed to keep going. Of course if Disney wants it might be time for Sony to face the music and start marching eventually.
